Patrick is an extremely gifted creative who is far ahead of his time. He has phenomenal capabilities as a musician, producer, and engineer. More than that, he was incredibly easy to work with and is a great person, so in my opinion he’s the total package.

On my track “Ivory Tower” (a song relating to social issues) Patrick really delved into and invested himself into making sure my feelings were represented sonically. We created one of my most vulnerable tracks as a result.

Working together with Patrick is just great. He listens very carefully to what is needed and shows a lot of patience, even when I came up with some last minute adjustments for the track. Apart from him being greatly responsive and communicative, he also stands out technically and musically. I would recommend him to any songwriter or band that wants to lift up their tracks.

I couldn't be more pleased. Patrick not only paid close attention to the technicalities that make music sound professional and excellent, but also cared particularly about my thoughts through the whole process. Although it seemed effortless the way he brought my ideas to life, the quality of his work speaks to the level at which he dedicates himself to it. Professionalism and timeliness top notch. I will be back.

Patrick is a standout producer with excellent attention to detail and sound selection. I am blown away by the level of fine-tuning and thoughtfulness he puts into his tracks. On the songwriting front, his lyrics are catchy and smooth, yet at the same time piercing and profound. He's a dedicated producer and I highly recommend him!

I first heard rumblings about Patrick several years ago when he was making GarageBand beats. Even then, I was thoroughly impressed by his creativity & passion despite limited resources. I kept my ear to the ground about Patrick's journey, and did he ever progress. Within a year he was proficient in professional workstations, synthesizers, mixing tools, & plugins, & he only keeps growing stronger. I've worked with Patrick many times, and what he brings to the table is always fresh. He’s easy to work with, and dedicates his professional ear and visionary mind to each and every project. Hire him.

Interview with Patrick Maresco (Deflect)

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Jophes is a producer who is absolutely incredible in the field he works in. Davis Smith is one of the best songwriters and creative minds I've ever worked with. Check them out.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: "Where should I record my vocals? What mic should I use?" Getting a client's vocals in can be a tricky one. It's critical in order for me to create a mix that's as professional as we both want that the vocals sound professional and are recorded in a good environment with a good mic. In terms of a "good mic", don't stoop below $100, and don't spend $30000. Find a good middle ground. $300-$500. I can't give a specific recommendation because everyone's voices react to different microphones differently. Also, studio time is not a bad idea if you don't know how to run a vocal session (though you can always learn via YouTube University).

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: Super proud of the album Kahlen Barry is working on and the tracks I've been able to produce and mix on there for him.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: My 12-track record, "Contr[addictions]."

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: If it sounds good, it is good.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: I want the quality of your mix to be able to sound like it could reach the radio.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: The ability to be creative and make money from it.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I don't think people understand the difference between production and mixing, generally. Production is finding the ingredients of a cake and putting them together, mixing is actually baking the cake.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your vision for your artistry? For this track? Who are your biggest influences? What are some of your favorite artists right now? What is the message behind the song? What songs have you been drawn to because of the music itself?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have references handy for anything -- the vibe of your track, the drums, the bass, etc. If you have time, it always speeds up the process to know the basic terms of production beforehand and how to distinguish drums, bass, synths, etc. in the mix. Oh, and have a mic setup (yours or someone else's) ready for your vocals.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A laptop, a midi keyboard, a pair of studio headphones, a mic, and an SSD drive.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Hip-hop and pop with a 1980's flair.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Celebrity-wise? Billie, Ariana, Taylor. But really any artist who wants to write and produce a solid piece of art, whether it's pushing the boundaries or utilizing conventional song structures with their own twist.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Be intentional with EQ. Finding beautiful sounds is exciting, but finding their own places in the mix without getting lost in the mud is the key to a radio-ready mix. (And watch out for those low mids.)

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip hop and pop. I've also been hired for specific 1980's pop throwback tracks -- and some film composition work, too.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My obsession with a song sounding perfect to my ears before releasing.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: A diverse set of influences, time learning the pop tricks of the trade at Westlake Recording Studios in LA, quickly enacting changes to songs that clients request, and a large sample and sound library to pull from for a variety of styles.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Every song is different. We start with a call to get to know each other, see where the project needs to go, then I get to work. I heavily utilize sample libraries, Arturia synthesizers, and my friend Jophes' hardware synth setup to get started. I build the track's arrangement out, swap different pieces around, and there you go. It has to be both methodical and organized while also creatively free.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: A desk, speakers, MIDI keyboard, and a laptop. A couple other things, but that's all you need to get the magic started.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Quincy Jones, Max Martin, & Jack Antonoff have got the whole "pop production" thing boiled down to their own unique formulas. I also admire Bruno and Kendrick.

  41. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  42. A: I started on piano when I was six, I started writing songs and producing demos when I was 11, I started releasing music when I was 15, and I began producing in Logic when I was 18. Getting fluent in Logic was the key that unlocked the rest of what's happened since.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Either a client asks me to create a song from scratch, or we work from a song they've already written. We have a call to go over influences and ideas, then I get to work.
