Interview with Kenny Carkeet
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I went to FullSail university from 2005-2008 studio Audio Production and Entertainment Business. I then moved to LA and worked in songwriting/production studios as an engineer soaking up every bit of songwriting knowledge i could. I mostly worked for Jimmy Messer (Kelly Clarkson, Enrique Iglesias, Spoon, etc). I would then write a song that would become one of the biggest songs of the decade "Sail" by AWOLNATION. The singer and I created the song and it started playing at radio. We put together a band and toured the world for the next 8 years together playing main stage slots at ACL, Coachella, and more.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a career spanning 20 years creating 200+ songs every year. I have worked with some of the biggest artists and have played the biggest shows (ACL, Coachella, etc). I understand what it takes to have a 'great' song and sounds COOL. Interesting is what I aim for, not necessarily 'perfection.'
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the type of work the project needs, I'll usually start by cleaning everything up and making everything work 'nicely' with each other. Timing, Pocketing, tuning, etc. Then I'll get into additional production if needed, then on to Mixing.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I'm running a Pro Tools HD rig using Presonus conversion. I utilize outboard gear such as Chandler Germanium Pre Amps, Universal Audio 1176 Compression and more. I have Waves Platinum bundle as well as SoundToys, Arturia, Rob Papen, and more.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Producers: Ricky Reed, Scott Storch, Rick Rubin, Butch Vig, Dennis Herring, Damon Alburn, Alex Turner Artists: LCD Soundsystem, Rage Against the Machine, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Phoenix, Tame Impala, etc
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I write, produce, and mix songs for all types of clients. I do both in person production as well as online assistance. I am a multi-instrumentalist that can help finish any aspect of a song that you need!
