Josh Frigo on SoundBetter

I'm a producer and multi-instrumentalist in Nashville, TN. 10 years production experience, specializing in Pop and Alternative music. Featured music on MTV, CMT, and more.

I want to take your musical idea and help you transform it into a recorded work of art.

Do you have a song in your head or in the memo app on your phone? From my studio in Nashville, TN I can take your demo or top line and turn it into a sonically stunning recording.

I'm a cellist, guitarist, and keyboardist specializing in Pop and Alternative music. I've produced songs for "The Voice's" Phùng Khánh Linh, Dove GMA Award Nominee John Tibbs, and more.

My productions have been featured on hit TV shows like CMT's "Nashville," MTV's "Teen Mom," and NBC's "Ordinary Joe."

Together, we'll make sure your song is complete and ready for recording. Then we'll collaborate on ideas for arrangement and I'll write and perform the parts to track (Pro Tools). Finally, we'll make edits to the recording until we're happy with the final product, and I will prep the session for mix. If you need help finding mixing and mastering engineers, or are unsure how to ready / deliver your song for distribution, I can help you with that too.

I'm ready to help you make music that moves listeners. Contact me and let's get started.

Very late with this, but I was very happy with the job Josh did on my song. He provided a good number of tracks to review, most of which were used and Josh was very responsive to what I was asking for, and very prompt in completing the job! Great appreciated!

Josh has been wonderful to work with. He is organized, communicates clearly & honestly: a consummate professional. Josh's arranging, playing and producing skills are top-notch. Not inexpensive but the value-to-price ratio is excellent. I look forward to working with Josh again in the near future.

Interview with Josh Frigo

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: I work using a hybrid style. I record using lots of vintage gear (71 Twin Reverb, two Hammond organs, Rhodes suitcase, Yamaha CP-70, Rogers and Ludwig drum kits, Cadac J Type console) which all run into the digital world of Pro Tools. There we have lots of digital libraries (Drum Samples, Serum, Keyscape, etc.) and process it all with the best sounding modern plug-ins (Slate, Universal Audio, Soundtoys, etc.)

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Artists: Bruce Springsteen, Kendrick Lamar, Joni Mitchell, Jason Molina, Sia. Producers: Jonathan Wilson, Blake Mills, Tony Berg, Richard Swift, Susan Rogers, Jack Antonoff. Songwriters: Carol King, Jason Isbell, Max Martin, Oak Felder. Instrumentalists: Rob Moose, Jim Keltner, Carol Kaye, Herbie Hancock.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I recently produced Joel Levi's self-titled album and co-wrote some of the songs on it. Joel is a long-time friend and the chance to finally work with him on a larger project was really rewarding. It's been great to see all the success he's finding with it.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: This summer I'm producing a single for Dan Dietrich, an EP for Theis, sync content for Joel Levi, a single for Danika Portz, and I'm touring with Trent Harmon.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: I love Dave Elwert and Mark Bullock and work with them both regularly!

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both! Analog and digital each have their own sonic characteristics, working methods, and opportunities to contribute to the creative process. Use each when you can and don't let them distract you from the final production!

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: My promise is that I will bring a professional, collaborative spirit to your production, and work diligently to ensure that you are excited about the final product.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: I love the process of taking an idea and turning it into a finished product. The journey is so fun and rewarding, and you're left with something that will last you a lifetime.

  17. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  18. A: I often find clients have a strong idea of what inspired their art but don't know how it ought to be fully realized. I find it's helpful to showcase similar productions that I think would fit their song, as well as discuss elements of the arrangement I think will be integral to the song.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: My biggest misconception is that I only play one or two instruments. But in fact I regularly perform professionally on acoustic and electric guitar, keys, vocals, cello, and more!

  21. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  22. A: Typical questions I ask fall into two main categories: logistical and artistic. Here are some examples. Logistical: "What is your budget for this production?" "What is your ideal timeline for this production?" "What do you want to accomplish commercially with your production?" Artistic: "What inspired this song or idea?" "What do you think of when you imagine the final production of your song?" "What do you want this song to make you and the listener feel?"

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Never be afraid to speak up. I'm here to help you make something you're proud of and excited about. If you find that isn't happening, let me know and we can figure it out together.

  25. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  26. A: Tascam 4 track cassette recorder, SM58, Roland TR808, Gibson J-50, Multi-Vox MX312.

  27. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  28. A: I moved to Nashville near the end of my studies at Ball State University, when an artist I had been producing landed a record deal in Nashville. I finished my degree remotely and began playing and producing for artists in town and have been doing so for the last 10 years.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: I would love to work with recording artist, producer, and genius Jonathan Wilson. His knowledge of classic recording production and the authentic nature of his work would make for an amazing experience.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Work hard and have fun. Getting to the final version of a song often takes time, patience, and lots of trial and error. Never give up and remember to enjoy the failures and successes along the way!

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I primarily work with Indie, Pop, and Americana artists in Nashville. However, I have an extensive background in Electronic, Classical, and Country music through my Bachelor of Music from Ball State University, and my years as a touring musician for country artists.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: My strongest skill is my ability to interpret an artists desires for a song into a fully realized production. It doesn't matter if they know the "correct" terminology for what they want, together we'll find it.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: I bring a collaborative, open approach to song production, working with artists every step of the way to make sure they're happy. Plus 10 years of professional songwriting, production, and performing experience across several genres.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: My work process typically happens in three phases: Pre-production, production, and Post-production. Pre-Production: We talk about what the client needs for their specific project and find a solution that works for them. This part of the process is where we'll lay out a budget, set a timeline for deliverables, and begin the initial creative work on the clients idea (songwriting edits and punch-ups, talk about the emotion and vibe of the track, and collaborate on an arrangement. Production: We do the thing. I'll start the recording process based on the arrangement ideas discussed so far, and new ideas that happen as the production goes on. I'll update regularly during this process to ensure the client likes how the track is developing and make adjustments if necessary. Post-Production: We sit with the song to make sure we're happy with the production, make necessary revisions, and create a demo mix so the clients mixing engineer is aware of any special production (reverb, delays, etc.) the client wants on the track.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: I run a studio in East Nashville called RVR. It features a Cadac J type console and two PreSonus Quantums for A/D into Pro Tools. Main monitoring is B&W 805s, Yamaha NS10s as alts, and two Yamaha YST-SW216 for subs. We have a great mic collection, newly featuring a custom built U47 clone and the Slate VMS ML-1.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I primarily produce tracks for my clients. I take a song idea or completed song, work up an instrumental arrangement with the artist, and record that arrangement.
