Peter Serravalle is one of Vancouver's most accomplished and versatile guitarists. Currently he is on the road with Princess Cruises as a show band guitarist/Musical Director cruising the world and playing with some of the worlds best entertainers and musicians. When not touring Peter finds himself at home as the first call guitar chair for many musical theatre and orchestral productions. Peter also has a deep passion for being in the studio and collaborating with creative people of all types to help bring projects to life.

Interview with Pete Serravalle

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was involved in a couple original musical theatre productions where I originated and orchestrated the guitar parts.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment i'm working on some quick, 1-2 minute clips of music for TV.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new here, so not yet. But i'll be sure to once i'm aware of them.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Depends on what we're going for.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: An honest, quality product.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The creativity and the freedom.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make this sound? The answer is almost always yes, unless they ask for a goat scream.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That its easy!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are you looking for and how can we manifest this together?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Feel free to be yourself and ask for what you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: my nylon string acoustic, a mandolin, a steel string acoustic, a tenor banjo and a tenor ukulele
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path is still evolving, but i've had a good blend of being on the road playing almost every style of music imaginable to being home playing in orchestra pits for musical theatre and the like.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My personal style is hard to narrow down as there's a lot in there. I started off like many of my peers with rock but soon started to include elements of blues, funk, jazz. I really am a chameleon.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Sting. Primarily because, well, it's Sting isn't it? Also i love his music and the room it has for variety.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Play for the song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most of the time it is in the pop-rock vein.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is getting a vibe of what the artist wants and playing for the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Authenticity, feel, understanding and compliment.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process involves a brief chat with the client when I get a sense of what they're looking for. Then I listen to the tracks they send me to get a sense of the overall concept of the track. Then after a few listens i'll start to approach the session with ideas which speak appropriately to the song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: At the moment, as i'm on the road quite a bit it's relatively simple: my mac book (running logic pro X), interface, my electric guitar (a telecaster), nylon string acoustic, a steel string. I also have with me my mandolin, banjo and ukulele. A couple mics, line 6 helix and a fender princeton reverb.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Well, the classic studio musicians of the 60's and 70's will always be an inspiration to me. The country session guys in the 90's are great too.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Hi guys! The most common work I do for my clients are guitar tracks from my home studio. I have also done some underscoring involving the guitar for documentaries and the like.
