Got a platinum record to my left, and a cup of tea to my right. Let's do some work.
I'm a songwriter whose cuts include songs with Bebe Rexha, Illenium, Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors - and even some old-school Charlie Puth. As a producer I spend most of my time creating stripped down demos, but also edit vocals, record guitar/piano parts, and co-produce on larger records. I came up in the classical scene as a pianist and trumpeter, but found my joy as a guitarist and songwriter, moving to study at Berklee College of Music and then working in Los Angeles. From there I've had the honour of being in rooms with some of the biggest artists in the world, bringing their visions to life. And that's what I want to continue doing for you.
I'm currently offering remote recording services, including piano (pop/rock), guitar (pop), and vocal demos. For each of these I make sure to carefully tailor a part to your project - and each includes an initial pass and two revisions. I also offering vocal comping to help you nail the perfect take, and demo production to bring your songs to life!

Interview with Robert Gillies
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm most proud of my work on 'Home' by Machine Gun Kelly, X Ambassadors, and Bebe Rexha. It's a song I originally co-wrote and demoed for my own artist project, so my initial input was in the writing and recording process. I ended up being the demo vocalist until we could find the right major label artist to take it to the next level, which was a challenge I'm still proud of until this day.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on my own artist project (Stirling), writing songs with various artists, and toplining for several EDM producers.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: First and foremost would be Lena Leon, who is an incredible vocal producer. If you have any doubt in your mind about your vocals and need them tuned/mixed to perfection, she's the person for the job.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music bypasses the critical mind, jumping straight to the heart - when the music and the song is right, there's no need to think or analyse, just be in the moment with it.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Give yourself as much time for your project as possible. We all want to release music ASAP, but the best results come from planning ahead - let's work on that next release, but let's make sure it's right before firing it off.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic guitar, MIDI keys, interface, laptop, SM7B.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a classical musician, climbing the ranks in various orchestras, choirs, and ensembles, until eventually finding my truest self as a guitarist and singer. Once I figured that out I went to Berklee College of Music, spent a few years running a musical NPO and songwriting contest, then made my way to LA to focus on writing. All in all, I've been making music for almost 30 years.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I generally work on mainstream pop and pop-rock, though I love being able to add vocals, piano, and guitar to anything that needs an earthy sound to it.
