Pleasure to work with Bastian very professional easy to communicate with him and is always open for new ideas that go well both ways.
Professional ingeneer! Great mix and mastering skills ✍🏻
I had Bastiaan do a mix and master on a song recently. Worked out great. Nailed it on the first try. My vocals have never sounded so good. I'll be working with him again. Would totally recommend.
Professional an quick mastering. Also, Bastiaan consider artistic choices! Perfect!
Bastiaan was very professional and extremely timely in both delivery and communication. Although we are about 8 hours apart, he always responded to messages within minutes. Both his mixing and mastering work is outstanding. I chose to go with him over other sellers his work sounds superior to theirs.
Have no words for the magnificent results Bastiaan provides. I will keep on trusting him with all my projects.
Interview with Imperium Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My mastering work for The Kennedy Center of Performing Arts. The fact that they trust me with their live performances brings a big smile to my face.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: An amazing EDM track that will be released next month. Very talented female singer.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The combination of both. Digital brings clarity and depth, analog brings warmth and a sense of 'realness'. Why not combine them?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will bring out the best in your music and make sure that it alligns with your vision and story.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The fact that I can use my creativeness on a daily basis and my freedom as a freelancer.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What exactly will you do for me? I'll bring out the absolute best in your music and get it up to par with commercial productions.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's a boring and technical job, which it is most certainly not!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The story they are trying to tell with their music.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Hire someone who's mindset alligns with yours.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Haha. This is tough. But, I guess that would be my Maschine 3, Gretsch Guitar, Shure SM58 Mic, MSI Laptop and Beyerdynamics Headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Been making music since I was a little kid. Studied music at a university in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Now full time freelance audio engineer and music producer.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Experimental, Playful and Unique.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Editors. They are like their own freaking genre. His voice, the band's arrangements, everything about them is awesome.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be open to anything. Be unique.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip Hop and Pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Enhancing the foundation the composer has layed down for me. I'm not just an engineer, I dive into my projects with a creative and playful mindset.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Anything it needs. No compromises. Always open for anything. The strangest setups and methods often bring the best results.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always listen to what my clients have accomplished without me. Then I determine what their work is lacking and what is already great. It's all about experimenting. There's no standard template or anything. Each song is unique, and I treat them as such. My clients are very involved with my mixing and mastering work. I actively ask for their input as I value their opinion as the genius behind their creation. Together, we bring out the best!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I don't like to brag, but I have a great set of ears. They allow me to create awesome sounding records in just about any environment. Most of my work is done from my own studio though. By the end of the year, I'll be traveling around Scotland and the rest of the UK for production and engineering work. I'm just going to say it. I love digital processing! It provides clarity, crisp and depth. Nevertheless, I also use analog compression and equalizing for that nice bit of warmth. I have a ridiculously huge library of high end software. Reverbs, compressors, delays, saturators, amp modelers, limiters, equalizers, basically anything you can imagine. This is why I am able to accomodate quite a lot of genres.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Muse, The Editors, Post Malone, Kendrick Lamar, Biffy Clyro, N.W.A, Ed Sheeran to name a few.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Hybrid Digital and Analog Mixing & Mastering.
