Matthew Marino is a songwriter/ producer from Los Angeles, CA, his writing credits and recent collaborations include MOD SUN, blackbear, Wes Ghost, Charlotte Sands, Bryce Vine, Fame On Fire, Said The Sky, Sueco, Huddy, Cassadee Pope, Lil Aaron, Travis Mills, Bad Wolves, Chri$tian Gates, Plain White Tees, Connor Kaufmann and many more.....
Los Angeles-based musician Marino makes music that mirrors his life. Guided by authenticity, the songwriter, producer, and proven artist discovered his passion for music during his formative years in South Florida playing and performing in bands inspired equally by both pop and punk. Marino’s youth was one defined by collaboration and peer enlightenment- virtues that forged him into the leader he is today. Walking a tight rope between hip-hop, pop, and electro-R&B, Marino’s music today rejects modern genre queues and instead embraces the formless nature of sound itself. In addition, his writing credits and recent collaborations include MOD SUN, blackbear, Charlotte Sands, Bryce Vine, Fame On Fire, Said The Sky, Sueco, Huddy, Cassadee Pope, Lil Aaron, Bad Wolves, Chri$tian Gate$, Lauren Weintraub, Chandler Leighton, Plain White Tees, The Struts, Lil Lotus, Sad Alex, Connor Kaufmann, Lenii, Oliver The Kid, Quinton Griggs, No Love For The Middle Child, Boon, John Harvie, MKLA, Jacob Sartorious, Tana Mongeau, Slushii, poutyface, Terror JR. and many more…
Notably, Marino’s influential collaboration with MOD SUN and blackbear on their single “Heavy” dominated streaming charts by tapping a cool 1 million streams in just 24 hours. In 2024 Marino joined Fame On Fire as they took their single "Nightmare" to #12 at US Mainstream Rock Airplay Radio.

Interview with matthew marino
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Fame On Fire - "The Death Card" album. Released in Sept 2024. The first single "Nightmare" peaked at #12 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart on Billboard and the second single is currently at #17!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Producing an EP for a band called "Uncured", New "Fame On Fire" demos for future album, Helping write a few for a new "Point North" album, a lot of Kpop stuff and countless other cool things.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Matt Malpass!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I love the rawness and realness from analog but there's so many helpful and amazing tools and plug ins now on the digital side.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to work on your project until it 100% aligns with your vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The ability to meet new people/collaborators all the time and put down our walls immediately so we can get to the good stuff and write the best song possible.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Why should I write with you instead of somebody else? A: I've studied and trained and worked hard to learn how to put myself in other peoples shoes and visualize someone else's vision. A lot of writers I know are too caught up in their own lives and make every session about them when being a co writer is obviously about the artist you are writing for.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That simple means easy.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your overall message? What is the target audience you are trying to reach? Is the artist you are trying to be true to who you are?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Sometimes the best idea isn't your idea. Being a good collaborator has helped me land over 100+ commercial releases and build a huge network of collaborators.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Apogee Duet, Sony u80, Fender Mustang, V8s by KRK and a nice pair of Sony headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started working under another producer in 2018 and then went full time in 2019 and signed my first publishing deal in 2021!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I've mastered the ability to have fun and make artists that work with me feel comfortable while at the same time being 100% focused on making the best product possible.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: A Day To Remember... one of my favorite bands growing up as a kid. Would love to make a song with them.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get on your set up once everyday even if its just to mess around with some sounds. You never know when the magic is going to come and if you aren't trying everyday you aren't opening up the vessel for it to make its way to you.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Active Rock, Alternative Pop and Ballads.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening and understanding what the artist is looking for and then taking their demos / ideas to the next level.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My taste. I pride myself in being able to give songs a commercial appeal without losing the rawness that made it a great song to begin with.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I always start by getting to know an artist so I can understand their vision + their taste and what they are going for lyrically and sonically.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My DAW of choice is Logic X + I have a Sony c80 that runs into a Warm Tone Beast + into a Warm WA76 for my vocal chain.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Erik Ron, Zakk Cervini, Justin Tranter, Julia Micheals, Mike Posner, Andrew Goldstein
