Robert Matlock on SoundBetter

Hello! My name is Robert and I am a Singer-Songwriter and Producer out of Dallas, TX. I specialize in song structuring/composition and topline. I am extremely versatile, able to adapt to many different genres and vocal styles. All of my services are here "work-for-hire", so you get to keep all of your royalties and rights.

Sing on your track: The price will vary depending on whether the lyrics/melodies are already written, and the overall vocal requirement of the song. I will offer a discount if the vocals are for a track that I wrote. I usually record 3 main vocal layers (comped), along with multiple harmonies per section, as well as background vocals/ad libs. If you would like for me to write the melodies and/or lyrics for you as well, it will be an additional $75 each. I record in a treated vocal booth, using an industry standard Manley Reference Cardioid microphone through a Neve 1073SPX or Focusrite ISA, 100% dry.

Vocal melodies for your track: I will offer you something memorable and catchy that suits the atmosphere your song provides, and also do harmonies. If lyrics are not written I will record various da-na's and ah's for the melody reference.

Full instrumental: We can have a conversation and discuss what exactly you are looking for. We can go over your own music for influence, or you can show me examples of other artists/bands whose sound heavily influences your project and go from there. I can pretty much adapt to anything. I will provide you with a basic mix of the song, guitar/bass/drum tabs, MIDI files, and stems.

I also offer services such as piano writing, vocal comping, and mastering as well.

Interview with Robert Matlock

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: You and your audience will never be disappointed, it is as simple as that.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I LOVE getting to work with some many different minds, every job and client is so unique, every one has a different story that they want to tell. This allows to me stay flexible musically and keeps me very well rounded so that I can be helpful to a variety of clients.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I have singing and writing songs for 10 years now, and it has finally gotten to the point where I can earn a decent living and do this full time.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I bring to the table all of the knowledge I've accrued over the last 10 years. I have spent thousands of hours honing and polishing my skills, and in all of that I time I have developed a true sense of what does, and doesn't work. I have worked on countless songs in countless genres, and even though the styles and approaches may all be different, the core of what makes a great song is the same.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I always start by communicating with the client about what they want from their song, what are they trying to accomplish, what are they wanting "say" with their song, what's the message. I typically will go over my client's influences and find out what niches they love in music and try my best to work that in to final product in a unique and creative way.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: I primarily aid songwriters and producers with vocals. Most of the time they come to me with a rough idea of what they want melodically and lyrically. I'll then break down the song and align myself with the emotion and overall tone of the track, and then find the "pocket" that best suits the vocals.

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: I just finished wrapping up a song with a producer, the song is for a band that is fronted by one of my best friends, his band of which is signed to a reputable label and has over a million plays via spotify alone. I worked extensively on the vocals, handling most of the topline melodies and aiding with lyrics.

  15. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  16. A: I am currently working on 2 different personal projects, both of which I sing and write all of the music for. 1 is an alternative metal band that influences from bands like Linkin Park and Breaking Benjamin. The other is a pop rock band in the style of Twenty One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, and One Republic.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I currently work with a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface that produces sound through 2 JBL LSR305 monitors. For vocals I record in a treated vocal booth. I use 4 different microphones to record: the Manley Reference Cardioid, the Warm Audio WA47, a Audio Technica AT4040, and a Shure Sm7b. I run my vocals into a Neve 1073SPX or Focusrite ISA Two preamp, completely dry (no EQ, compression etc. unless otherwise specified).

  19. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  20. A: I specialize in rock and pop music but I've written and recorded my voice on various metal, rap, folk, country, and punk songs as well, just to name a few.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: There are no rules.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I've always been extremely fascinated by the band Linkin Park. The band has always been extremely flexible and creative when it comes to their music, and they've never been afraid of taking chances. My general style of songwriting is heavily influenced by their work, and I'd love nothing more than to get in a room with those guys and write a record.
