Hits and Earworms

I am a 22-years-old girl specialized in the Hits and Earworms qualities with a thesis in these two scenes and a Summer-Hit with an unknown artist in Vienna (One-Hit-Wonder) in FM4. Also made some Top 40 songs in my Homeland Guatemala. Now, after my studies in Vienna I want to start a real career in the music industry.

I always had a good feeling for finding the songs that would turn into hits. Dreamed with being an A&R in the old music industry and now I see that my talent in this new industry is the songwriting and toplining. Bachelor of Arts in the University of Vienna and several production, writing and recording courses in Berklee College of Music Online.

I also work in a Studio, already for some time, where I do mostly comping, melodyne, audio editing and session and demo singing. If you are interesting in some of those things, I may be able to help you too.

Interview with Fay-OG (Fatima Gerendas O.)

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: People ask me a lot how is it possible that I make songs that fast. My answer is, that I don't wait for inspiration to come to me. As a musicologist I know how to find the right melodies and harmonies and even lyrics sometimes that go with the artist I am working with and every musician knows that the hard part of making a song is the beginning, but when you are already in and have a good part of it, it's just about working on details, which of course isn't easy either, but it's more of a routine thing.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: A lot of people don"t believe that there is a Formula for making a Hit-Song, but there is. Just look at the big Chart-Songwriters like Max Martin. He knows and evens says it publicly, that he composes based on a specific formula. Making Chart-Hitting Pop-Music is as hard as making a classical composition, it's just that the areas where it gets difficult are different.

  5. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  6. A: I am proud of the Song "The Sun Is Out" from CREA. She made it to a high rotation in one of the biggest radios in Austria without even being known and it was all because the hearers liked the song that much. It was a summer-Hit. In that project I did the whole Songwriting, Toplining and I even recorded the back-vocals and guitar.

  7. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  8. A: Now I am working at songs with two big clients, Everlaster and CREA. I am also working in editing productions in the studio I work in.

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: Both together. Digital you can try different ways of mixing to get an idea of how it will sound and plug-ins now-a-days are so well done, that it really sounds good, still there are some channel strips (like an SSL channel strip) that if you just let the music go through such a strip analog at the end of the production in a summation, it might make a big change in the sound and make it all sound consistent.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That I get to be creative in many different ways and that I get to learn new things with every new song I make.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What qualities does the song have to have? which register is the singer? are you searching for a similar sound of another existent song? how fast do you need the work finished? How do you want to work in the means of copyright? (will I get any publishing rights?) To which kind of clients do you want to get?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Don't be scared of trying to work with new musicians. They are the ones that have new ideas that will be trends in the future.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: my apollo twin, my roland juno-G, my avantone mic, my computer with logic in it and my guitar.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started in the music industry since I am 9 years old (11 years from now). I started as singer songwriter and developed to producer with time. Since 2010 I work recording own music and since 2016 I work in professional Studios making big productions for artists in the Pop area and in the advertising area making Musik for Adds. I play many instruments (piano, guitar, recorder, cello, ukulele, e-bass), know how to use my voice and have even worked as vocal coach in some occasions and I study a Master in Musicology, where I learned to see music also in an analytical way.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I am an artist that works on the background for other artists. I believe that my biggest strength is to be able to adapt to the style of my client. Still, if I have to say something that makes my songs special as an artist, I would say that my element are voice-games and harmonies. I know how to use voices so that they give a special effect to every song.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: I would love to work with P!nk. I think she has a very special voice, powerful and still incredibly emotional if needed. I think I could use that good.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Less is more! ;)

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Pop Top 40 Hits and R&B

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Creating Hooks and earworm. I am good at finding out the good elements of a song and checking the ones that will not work well in the Industry.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Hooks and earworms. I know the elements that a song needs to have to get into people's head and stay there. If you need a song that turns into an earworm, I can offer you the right hooks to reach that. On editing I can also bring a natural sound but that ist as exact as possible. It will be well produced, but people won't notice that it is not a "natural" take, because It will still sound very natural.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I like to know as much as possible about the result the client expects. I concentrate in the most important elements he/she needs and analyze and hear the already delivered tracks. After making a session and trying some possibilities, I make different demos and send them to the client for approval. If the client is happy with one of them, I produce this one in a more detailed way till the client is happy with it.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I have a small home studio with basic equipment but I have the possibility of working in a big industrialized Studio if I need it with all needed equipment.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Manny Marroquín, Ricardo Arjona, Denizz PoP, Ester Dean, Ne-Yo, Stargate, Alicia Keys, P!nk.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I am songwriter, topliner and work on editing audio, for example vocal tuning and comping. As songwriter and topliner I specialized in making hooks in Pop Top 40 Hits. I also can work good with references (for example, if a client needs something that sounds like a particular existent song).
