Steven is incredible! Super talented dude who allowed me to have the creative input that I wanted, while still taking on the role of the producer. His ideas and vision for the song really took it to the next level and turned out to be everything I wanted and more, which I feel is the mark of a great producer. He also had a great turnaround time which is always refreshing. On top of it all, he's a super nice dude, and I will definitely be working with him again!
Steven is absolutely flames. His turnaround times are insane given the quality of his production. Search far and wide and you'll never find someone who didn't enjoy working with him. I highly recommend having Steven produce your record – you won't be disappointed!!
Steven is the best!! He's recorded and produced three demos/songs for me now and I've been nothing but thrilled with the final product every time. I will continue to work with him and refer him to all of my friends and colleagues when they're looking for demo/recording/mixing/mastering work. He's the bomb and so easy and fun to work with. Also quick turnaround and works with you on deadlines and what your overall goal is.
Steven is such a talented writer, vocalist and producer. He is incredibly kind and so professional and easy to work with. He really puts his heart into every project he does and has been one of my favorite people to work with. Would definitely recommend. 10/10
Interview with Steven Martinez
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked on JUNO's first EP (coming out in Sept 2018) I'm extremely proud to have been a part of the record. Juno could have worked with anyone, and I was humbled that she rang me and asked if I would produce for her.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on a pop country track in the vibe of Hunter Hayes.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: N/A
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It's 2018, we have cars that drive themselves. Can you tell which I prefer?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You're going to sigh in relief because you finally found a producer that get's what you're going for.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I absolutely love creating alongside an artist, finding their sound and helping them share their sound with new fans.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Usually customers ask me about my process, which can be found above!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think the biggest misconception about production is that it's all about gear and large format studios- when in reality, I know lots of producers who work out of small bedrooms and make stellar tracks.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Where can I find your previous work? (Or Social Media) What are you hoping to accomplish with your song/project? What can I help you with? What can I help you with? Tell me about your project, with as many details as you'd like. What funds have you allocated to this project?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have you released a song, or an EP? Your family and friends heard it, maybe even loved it, and then it kind of blew over? Now, would you rather release music to an actual fan base, generate streams, develop your brand, and develop a following as an artist? I turn down a large percentage of my proposals. I am looking to work with artists I believe in and want to form long-term relationships with. We start with your song- your product- make it excellent, and go from there.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take my Mac, a guitar, a mic, a pair of monitors and lastly, my phone, so I could call someone to come get me off the island, while I produce until they arrive. (My mac wouldn't last more than a few hours...there's no outlets on a desert island!!)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began when I got a guitar for Christmas when I was 12- I've been playing and making tracks since then.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is expressive, artistic and intentional.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My ability to hear what the client hears- and know how to lay it out into a comprehensive track that's modern and relevant.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically I start with a demo- acoustic guitar + vocal to a click or something similar. I then build drums, bass, and then re-do the guitar. I do most instruments during this time, go back and add percussion and the final touches.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop and pop country.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening to an artist, developing a vision, and making it into something tangible and audible.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: NS10 and Neumann KH120 Monitoring, UA Apollo Twin, AKG 414/ AT 4050/ SM57/58 / NI Kontakt Komplete 11 + Various VI's and Plugins
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Busbee, Justin Niebank, Jon Bellion, Andy Grammar.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Andy Grammar and Jon Bellion. A pair of creative geniuses that aren't afraid of pushing the boundaries.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: It starts with the song! The foundation of a project must be strong; music is no exception.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for artists is produce tracks, branding, and social media marketing.
