Interview with Kelsey.D

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked with Dulaneyland music. I was able to connect with clients from all over the world and help them create the sound they wanted for their songs using my BGV skills. I thoroughly enjoyed the consistent work and am hoping to get back to helping others in that way.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on an album for myself, but finishing little projects here and there to keep the creative juices flowing.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Chris Adams of Vonjoie Music Group. I have worked with him for years and he is an amazing producer. We've done many projects together that our clients were very happy with.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital because it just saves time. Get it?

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will always give my best. And I always take into account what my clients want and their vision for their music.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like getting to do what I love and help others reach their goals. I also enjoy the creativity of music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long will it take to get the songs done? It depends on what the song requires. But within 1-4 days

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy. We make it seem easy, but it takes a lot of thought, TIME, and effort.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are your goals for this song? How do you want people to feel listening to this song? What is the purpose behind the song? What are you looking for from me as far as sound for this song?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: It's great to have the song written(for bgv's) and an idea of how you would like it to sound. Please have references and written out lyrics. If you would like me to write for you, references and song content should be clearly explained.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, headphones, interface, mic, and my midi board.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I was a teacher, but now I'm an educator; however, I'm building my music and connections so I can work on music full time. I have been working on music for 10 years and educating for going on 5 years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is so versatile, but it's rooted in R&B and Gospel.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Stevie Wonder because he is a legend. He has written so much timeless music, produced and written for other amazing artists, and his vocal ability is unmatched. His body of work are goals for me.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Be sure that as you sing each line, you are starting your sentences and ending your sentences at the same. The rhythm at which you sing each line is key to a professional sound.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Gospel and R&B typically.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is being able to adapt to any type of song.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: To every track, I bring my soulful voice and thoughtfulness. You can hear them both in the backgrounds. My vocals can be warm, big and bright, powerful, sad, happy, whatever is needed for the track.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I will get a sense of what the client wants me to do(whether it's writing, bgv's, or creating backgrounds to a song) and take a full listen of the song. I import the song with vocals and the song without vocals and I use them both to complete the task. I typically confer with the client, see if any revisions need to be made and go from there.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is in home, I get easy access to it. It has a professional sound. I also use logic to record and edit my vocals.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Producers like Timberland, Singer/Songwriter/Producer PJ Morton, Missy Elliot, Justin Timberlake, Lalah Hathaway, Anita Baker, Eric Dawkins, Tank, and more.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I am usually adding a professional sound of background vocals for clients. Sometimes clients ask me to embellish the bgv's to make it more creative.
