Interview with Paul Ian Bailey
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: B.O.B. "Airplanes" was the first really big record I worked on, and it's one of my favorites because I had a feeling the whole time we were working on it that it was going to be a big song!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping people achieve their creative vision, and making stuff up!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started by recording my band demos on cassette 4 track as a teenager, attended Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in AZ in 2006 , interned at 4th Street in Santa Monica, was a runner, then assistant, then tracking engineer for Paramount/Ameraycan/Encore from 2007-2009, then was hired by Atlantic/APG/Warner and worked with them full time until the 2020 pandemic. I have been working freelance for hire since!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing is my specialty, with emphasis on vocal production and sonics.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Hip Hop, Alt are the main genres I work in but have done a bit of everything over the years.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Over 10 years as a full time engineer for major labels has developed my ear towards what is contemporary and needed for big mixes.
