Interview with Eugene Lai

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My latest project is for a song titled "Traps" by Abigail and Lil J when I was working with MFMF.. I was the beatmaker for that project and I felt that that song showcased what I've learned over the past few years.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Instrumental demos for pitching.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: Obtain briefs and expectations of the project from the client, dissect the problem areas and provide solutions with a rough timeline. Once the client agrees on a price and the overall process, work can begin immediately.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Seeing my clients smile after a job is completed!

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Questions about their project to understand problem areas and the goals and expectations of the client.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: 5 years and counting! 2 of the 5 years I've spent working as an in-house producer and mixing assistant for MFMF.. and now am currently freelancing on my own.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Simple is more.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Anything Pop! Though can produce EDM, Reggaeton, K-Pop, Trap as well!

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Mixing and mastering. Something about being able to manipulate sounds just feels like magic to me!

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Attention to detail to bring out the best in every song I touch and sometimes the song doesn't really need much either. Trust the song and allow it to guide the way. This is the way.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Creating the instrumental or beat for the client to be pitched or for their own projects. By being an in-house producer for MFMF. previously, I learned to mix instrumentals and vocals to be of competitive quality and to handle vocal editing (tuning, timing, alignment).
