Interview with Eugene Lai
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Seeing my clients smile after a job is completed!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Their favorite artists and music taste. Ultimately, it's what the clients are drawn to and they would want to sound similar if not, better than their favorite artists to at least be on the same playing field especially in the current competitive market.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Fully assured that I will get the job done with haste and professionalism.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started making music in my bedroom 5 years ago then worked as a production and mixing assistant 2 years ago.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Learn to use reference tracks and TRUST YOUR EARS. Understand how your favorite reference tracks sounds like and try to emulate them to get your ears used to your favorite sound. Eventually your ears will be trained to know what it likes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mainly Pop for now. However, am interested in working on a variety of genres to grow my skillset! Music is music after all.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing and mastering. Something about being able to manipulate sounds just feels like magic to me.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Attention to detail to bring out the best in every song I touch and sometimes the song doesn't really need much either. Trust the song and allow it to guide the way. This is the way.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Currently working as a production assistant and mixing assistant. However with my experience being in studio projects allowed me to grow and be more confident with my abilities to take on projects on my own.
