- Want to send a demo that makes an impact?
- Play your tracks out in a club?
- Release your music?
I work from my home studio using Industry Standard plugins and mastering techniques to give your music depth and level.
- Slate Digital
- Allen Heath
- Dave Smith Instruments
- Try to get the best mix on Levels and Stereo Field before exporting your Premaster file
- Leave the Master Fader at 0dB
- Leave some headroom – my rule of thumb is about -6dB (Peak Level) or -16dB (RMS) should do it
- Ideally, export your Premaster as a 24-Bit and 44,100Hz Sample Rate WAV file. The best rule to follow here is, if you created your recordings/tracks at 24 Bit, then export the Premaster at 24 Bit also.
Please Do Not:
- Do not put anything on the Master Channel.
- Do not normalise when exporting
- Do not export with Dither set to On
- Do not send your Premaster file as an MP3

Interview with NILA
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently mastered a track for Richie Blacker who has been dubbed as the 2021 Future artist for 2021 by BBC Radio 1
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A number of my own productions and mastering for a record label (Melodic Beats)
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not sure
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For sound design and creation, Analogue mainly as I believe the sound is warmer. I believe this to with processing although I think you can get very close with plugins which is why I use them. The other advantage with processing using plugins is for preset recall on projects
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To deliver a high quality final piece of music that can be played out at a club or on radio.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to do what I am passionate about and I never stop learning :)
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How do you get the mix sounding so wide and clear - lots of practice
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Its easy, anyone/website can do it - sorry I disagree!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want me to do for your music
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please note my do's/don'ts in order to optimise what I can do for you :)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer with Ableton... Moog One... Moog Sub 37, Dave Smiths Instruments Pro 6, Ableton Push
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I DJ'd for many years in Edinburgh and dabbled in production back then. Sine 2014 I have been producing and releasing my music on a number of labels.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Deep hypnotic and progressive house
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Sasha - I have been a massive fan of his for about 30odd years. I love his music :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Pick your sounds carefully and limit what you use as this can make a massive difference to the final mix.

A: For production, playing synths and recording live audio from synths straight into the DAW. For mixing and mastering, I seperate these two processes completely and use seperate project setups in Logic Pro for these stages.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I predominately use hardware synths for sound creation with a number of synths from Moog, Dave Smiths Instruments, Novation, Arturia and Behringer. I do work 'in the box' also and process these sounds using UAD, SSL, Slate Digital, Eventie and SoundToys plugins. My DAW's of choice are Ableton Live (for production) and Logic Pro X (for mixing and mastering).
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Sasha, John Digweed, Guy J, Nick Warren, Patrice Baumel, Hernan Cattaneo, Dave Seaman, Khen
