Interview with Rachael Schroeder

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: In the past year I have written, recorded, and tuned vocals for EDM producers (through Vocalizr). Right now I have been focusing on editing and tuning vocals because I am passionate about it no matter what kind of music it is.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Imogen Heap is a huge inspiration for me. She is one of the reasons I got into sound engineering and music production. Queen and Electric Light Orchestra are also influences for me because of their intricate and luscious vocal layering.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: I have had over a decade of experience in vocals. I am passionate about vocals and strongly believe in making a song the best it can be.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Anything vocals.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Nothing is ever too weird. Experiment with your sound, break the rules. Try anything, you can get rid of it later.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Imogen Heap.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: SM7, Apollo Twin, Omnichord, Minimoog, Rhodes.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Don't be afraid to be assertive and direct about what you want. Feel free to give me reference tracks. How I tune a song depends on the genre. For pop I usually tune a bit harder than I would for a folk song. Tell me what you want, and if you don't know we can figure it out!

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: I will work until you are happy. I will always serve the song and make sure it is the best it can be. Song is king.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: ProTools is my DAW of choice. I am proficient in both Auto-Tune or Melodyne for vocal tuning.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Generally Pop and RnB. I am open to working on any genre for vocal editing/tuning.

  23. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  24. A: Depends. If there is already an analog version of something, why bother with digital? Example: piano, strings, synthesizers. Just rent out a studio for a day and record the real thing! I am strongly against using MIDI pianos in songs... (:

  25. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  26. A: I am currently working on my own EP, playing shows around my city, and working as a promotions assistant at a popular venue here in Vancouver, BC.
