Mark Himley on SoundBetter

I'm a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist for film and tv. This requires me to be able to consistently deliver high quality music on very short deadlines. I also produce songs for artists both for film and tv as well as artist releases. Let's get to work!

My oldest memories are listening to music with my grandfather. Ever since I was a young child, music has been the center of my universe. My path started with the violin and trumpet, but shortly after I taught myself how to play guitar and that's truly where I first found my musical voice and where my path really started.

At a young age I also fell in love with film music and ended up studying film scoring and earning my Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Composition from McNally Smith College of Music. During college I also fell in love with electronic music production, and have since studied the production techniques of many different genres.

My musical path has taken me on quite the journey through many styles, and I've loved every second of it. This blending of styles has helped me create my own unique sound and musical voice. I love the creative process, and I love learning new styles and genres. More than anything I love sharing that process and creating and collaborating with other artists.

If you're looking for someone who is willing to try new things and be open to any and all ideas, let's work together! I look forward to making music with you!

I had the honor to work with Mark a few years ago. He composed a sound piece for our non-profit INDIGENIA, an organization that aims to preserve indigenous cultures through art. Mark captured the essence of himself and the beauty of the Wixárika culture in an extraordinary piece. Mark is a lovely person to work with, an old soul with a wonderful heart.

Mark and I collaborated on a song this summer; his music/production, my voice/lyrics. Mark is such a genuine man & dedicated artist! He reached out to me, allowing me my first opportunity to create a formal piece of music. The amount of comfort & encouragement, fun & enthusiasm I felt in our recording session is beyond what I could've imagined! Mark puts in his BEST & will bring out that in you!!

Mark is a pure delight to work with. I reached out to him a couple of years ago to create an original soundtrack for an important fundraising video for our educational nonprofit. Not only was the music absolutely perfect for the mood and spirit we wanted to convey, throughout the whole process he was a delight to work and collaborate with. If we could give him more than five stars, we would.

Mark is an outstanding producer and composer. I've had the pleasure of working alongside him and hearing much of his work. On top of this, he's an outstanding guy! Easy-going, communicative, and the ideal person to bring in on your project. You'll be glad you worked with him!

Interview with Mark Himley

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I co-scored a wonderful short film, Earth Angel, that I am SO proud of. We were nominated for Best Original Score at the Los Angeles Film Awards!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on Future Bass and Trap instrumentals for a number of music publishers.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Anna Yarbrough!! Anna is such an amazing pianist and can cover just about any style you need from Classical to Contemporary. Aside from being an amazing player, composer, and songwriter - she is an absolute pleasure. One of kindest people you will ever meet and work with.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: At the moment for me - digital. My digital workstation allows me to work immediately from anywhere I choose and get the same results every time.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I get to make music - does it get any better than that?!

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: What is it that is holding you back from bringing your vision to life? What exactly can I do to help make that happen?

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I grew up as a guitar player and thought that was going to be my only focus musically. However along the way I fell in love with film music and studied film scoring in college. Since college I have also developed a deep love for electronic music production and am happy to say I am finding my path combining all three of these pursuits to create my own unique sound. I have been pursuing music for over a decade.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Subtractive EQ!! If something isn't sitting right in your mix, don't boost the frequencies you are trying to get to cut through - instead look at other instruments in your mix that are already occupying that space that maybe don't need to be, and cut those frequencies to make room.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Lately it has been mostly Future Bass and EDM Trap

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My work ethic. When I commit to a project, I commit. It becomes my obsession and I strive to do the absolute best that I can.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: Typically I will get a brief and then work accordingly. I usually will set up my session with everything I need for the particular gig I'm working on and get all of the set up done, take a short break, and then come back and get into the creative process.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I record and produce everything "In the Box" currently. I run Logic Pro X and have a very large collection of software instruments and audio plugins.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Currently I am primarily creating instrumental music for film and tv in a wide range of styles with an emphasis on Future Bass, EDM Trap, and Electronic Pop.
