Interview with Pedro Pardal
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently mixing some songs of a "bossa nova" cover project and writing some material of my own.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Why not have the best of both worlds?
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise all my commitment to their needs, to serve their music and respect it and that they will get the results they are looking for.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love working with different people and different styles of music. I feel that I can learn a bit about everyone I work with.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I get asked very often if I can make it work (the song). My answer is, Yes, of course!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you feel your song needs and how do you what it to sound like?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Feel free to express your needs and your song's. I will do everything that is possible to oblige to them.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My gorgeous Meinl cymbals. They sound incredible anywhere..., a kick, a snare, stands including a drum throne and a pair of Vic Firth 5B sticks. There's no point on bringing Neumann's and Coles to a place with no electricity and nowhere to plug them to!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a professional musician for the past 17 years and I've been fortunate to work with a great number of artists and musicians from different styles and backgrounds and I feel that I learned a lot from it.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I see my self as a very relaxed person and a very good listener!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Sting some day. I've always been inspired by his music and musical aproach and awareness.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Listen to the musicians/artists you are working with. Understand their needs and their message so you can provide valid musical solutions they need.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I've worked with many artists of many different styles of music but most genre I've record or produced is pop, pop-rock.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I think that my solid playing and timing is my strongest skill although I feel that the most important skill to have is the ability to serve the song needs to make it work.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can guarantee a solid playing and timing, "pocket" groove, musical approach and the most important, to serve the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I prefer to know first from the client what are the directions to take on their song, what are their intentions and needs. Next I learn the song and then record. I make a couple of takes for trial and then I make about three final takes to choose from. Usually, it's the first one that it is used. :)
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two kinds of acoustics on my studio, a closed, dry room and an open, wide room. They work very well together and I have the opportunity to mix or use them separate. I have two stationary well miced and wired drum kits, ready to record. They are custom made with the following specs: Kit1 Beech thin shells BD 20"x18"; TT 10"x8"; FT 14"x14"; Kit2 Maple thin shells BD 22"x18"; TT 12"x8"; FT 16"x16"; (I prefer thin shells because they have a much more wider tuning range on every sizes) I have a good variety of snare drums to choose from, wood and metal with sizes from 10" to 14" diameter and 4" to 8" depth.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired with musicians wit great awareness and musicality like Sting, Phil Collins, Benny Greb, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly record live drums and vocal tracks, lead and/or backing. I'm also an arranger and producer.
