Interview with Peter Rangelov
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The album of my own original band who no longer exist. I produced and wrote all 12 songs for the album "Heavy Rain" by D.U.N.E., year 2012. I'm still proud of what I've done with the record.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I am producing my own album in the style of Rock/Alternative where I sing and I play every instrument - 7 songs done, 3 more to go. When is ready, I will post it on the platforms.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Some clients ask me...can you do this song like the last Ed Sherran hit? Ok, I say, yes, but why? Don't you wanna be something what represents you? When I write a song for someone, I try to expose his/her talent and bring that into the song.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Probably my misconception is that I don't experiment enough with different styles.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them how serious they are going with their product. I love to work with people who really wants to achieve something more, that motivates me, therefore I give my best.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is people to be patient for what they require. Good results comes with patients.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If there is electricity - Laptop / Audio interface / Speakers / Guitar / Mic If there is no electricity - just my guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing (and still do) with cover bands professionally for the past 20 years. I traveled all over the world over clubs, bars, hotels, casinos, cruise ships etc. For the past 10 years, after my graduating from private school in Manchester, UK with Music Production and Construction Diploma, also Commercial Engineering Diploma, I started to write, record and produce, mix and master music. So, I'd say I have a full 10 years of experience in a studio work.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: My long time favorite bands such 3 Doors Down, 30 Seconds to Mars, Daughtry, Alex Band from The Calling. Why? Lots of guitars ) Because I simply find myself there, that music fills my heart with happiness!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My guitar playing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Some people say that every song comes from an emotion. But in my experience, that's not always the case. When I have a client who wants a song like...right now.., I don't wait for my emotions to come, I grab the guitar and I start writing music, then the ideas are flowing and growing. I believe that inspiration comes with work, you don't wait for it.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: When I mix a song I start with drums and vocals first, then I add everything else. This how I get the best feel for any song. I work no more than four hours a day. In a three days time, I will deliver final mix and a master.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with Logic Pro and my mixing goes both in and out of the box using high quality plugins and some high quality hardware gear like mastering compressor from Dave High Design Titan, Dav Electronics preamps, Elysia EQ, Naumann monitors, Ferrofish converters, RME audio interface etc.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not really.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! I like both worlds. Digital is flexible, recall is easy. Analogue yes, every master I do with some pieces of analogue gear, nothing can beat that open sound. I use both in every record.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: It will sound great!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It makes me smile and happy, I feel relaxed when I am in the studio and on top of that, I am my own boss :)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'd say my style goes from pop to /rock/alternative
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My favorite one - use your monitors at a low level! You will last longer in the business )
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Manly POP/ROCK music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My all time favorite producers - Quincy Jones & Desmond Child!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Songwriting / Mixing & Mastering
