If it was possible to give this guy 10 stars I would. Michael is a great singer-songwriter. His energy is amazing, easy to work with(takes feedback well and gives great feedback) We are working on a ton of songs and I always trust him to delivery.

Michael has a great presence and an ear on how to make vocals sound classic. He writes great songs too - a pleasure to work with as well from start to finish. You have to have that in artists, flow is everything.

A true pleasure to work with! Michael is as talented as they get. His vocals are effortless and make you feel like every word he sings is meant just for you. Fantastic weaver of words that can accomplish anything you throw at him. One stop shop. Highly recommended.

Interview with Michael Shynes

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The Komodo one due to all the commercial success, I've never had something reach that many people so quickly. And then enable me to travel the world.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Pairing top 40 style vocals with acoustic guitars and pop producers to aim for maximum addictive impact.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Kevin Truckenmiller is an absolute beast of a singer and producer

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Analog, a great digital sound sounds cool. But a great analog sound takes you somewhere else.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Unless you love it, then I don't want your money :)

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being creative, I feel like that's my favorite aspect of music.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I have been fortunate to where most are putting their trust in me and allowing me to be creative, then revising. I'd say the most common question is just when can I get to what they want to work together on. Balance all the performances with studio work is tricky.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That its all about pitch, character and originality are what sells records.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What their outcome and goal with the song is, and what they are looking for.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Find the voice that reaches you on an instinctual level, then coach out the performance and execution you want.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: UA Apollo, API 512, KSM 44A, EL8 Distressor, Neumann U67

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Full time for 4 years, no music degree, self taught. Worked in social work and got a business degree prior to taking on music full time.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Genuine soulful music with pop sensibilities

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: John Mayer, as I believe he is the greatest combination of musician/singer/songwriter out there. Total devotion to his craft. And getting with supermodels..

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Keep it simple and layer as opposed to trying to do it all with one instrument. The vocal and groove remain the most important things.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Singer-Songwriter, Folk, and R&B

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Vocal execution as well as lyric and melody writing. Also I feel that delivering the performance in a way that is authentic and believable is one of my best assets.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My gift is melody for sure. The instant I hear an instrumental I immediately have ideas for vocal melodies. Then it just becomes selecting the strongest one.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I typically start with hooks and singing gibberish immediate melodies over a demo to get an idea. Then I end up filling out those raw ideas with words and story and try to find a unifying theme for the song.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have a loft above my garage that is sound proofed and entirely isolated from my home. I love this, as it gives me the flexibility to work any time day or night.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: David Gray, The 1975, Hammock, Tears for Fears, Bone Thugs and Harmony, Amos Lee, U2, The Police. Pretty wide ranging..

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Vocal work of all different kinds and types
