Holden has everything you would want from a producer- talented, professional, communicative, and passionate about music. Though I should also add patient as I usually have more than a couple requests for changes. He's a great guy and I cannot recommend him enough for your project.

Working with Holden was a dream come true. This was my first time working on a song and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner to work with. He is so talented, patient and open to suggestion. It truly feels like you are COLLABORATING when working with him. He respects your feedback and in the end you come out with something incredible. I know who I’ll be coming to in future and I can’t wait to see what else we can create.

Interview with Holden Potter

  1. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  2. A: Everything is worked through Pro Tools in my setup. I use an apollo interface primarily. UA preamps and compressors. Nueman, Shure, and Mojave mics littler the place. I have a handful of fender electrics and Gibson acoustics for sessions that call for them. And will rent any other gear I feel is necessary for the project.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: The record I just mentioned. Everyone dreams of moving to Nashville to make music, and I'm lucky enough to actually do it. I wrote all of the songs on the record, and produced some of the vocals on said project. Record is produced by Jaren Johnston (Cadillac Three).

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I'm currently working on a pop/rock/country record with Sony that will be released in 2020. Im pretty stoked to say the least. ,

  7. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  8. A: Pat Berry (Over in North Carolina, has done some incredible work for me over the years)

  9. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  10. A: I LOVE ANALOG, but anymore digital is the fastest and most effective way to create a lot of the music we all love.

  11. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  12. A: To give it hell! And to respect your time and money.

  13. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  14. A: Creating. The fact that something can exist that didn't before, is truly incredible.

  15. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  16. A: Can we edit "this" or change "that"? Can you replicate something I love?

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That producers have to take over projects and make them their own. I WORK FOR YOU.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: What their goals are for the product? Whats the passion behind it? Can we communicate regularly?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Ask questions! Have GOOD and REALISTIC references Be available

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: 1960 Gibson J-45 Standard Capo Leather Guitar Strap Gator Case Box of Elixir Light strings

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: After graduating with a Biology degree, I did what any kid would do... forget about it and move to Nashville. I started writing in town with whoever would let me. After a couple of years I landed an internship with a multi-grammy winning producer who really taught me the ropes. After this I signed my first music publishing deal with Sony ATV and rest has been history.

  27. Q: How would you describe your style?

  28. A: Moody Pop that uses space.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Keith Urban -- He somehow can transition from guitar slinging 4-on-the-floor country legend to top pop producer within the same record. His melodies are frustratingly good.. and he's a class act.

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Listen Listen Listen. Listen to mixes in your car, headphones, studio monitors, late at night, first thing in the morning... Doing this keeps your ears fresh and allows you to hear every aspect of the song. (oh... and also UAD plugins for some warmth and color)

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: I work primally on Pop and Pop-Country projects.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I most consistently complete demos for clients for pitching purposes. Following this, I would say general production for records I find exciting! Lately, I have been performing vocals for a number of clients!

  37. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  38. A: If you were to ask my publisher, it would be writing unique and vibe-filled songs.

  39. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  40. A: A unique perspective on sounds and tones, and a true OCD driven editing process.

  41. Q: What's your typical work process?

  42. A: It all starts with the SONG. Everything needs to revolve around the feel and meaning of the song. I tend to build the track from the drums up, ensuring the song hits just right.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: When it comes to music production, I'm consistently inspired my my "big three". This includes Dan Huff, Busbee, and Dave Cobb. Hard to beat em!
