Interview with Jon Asher

  1. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  2. A: Unlocking the "RADIO READY" polished sound for each artist I work with via the right Vocal treatment (tuning, vocal production, FX chain). It's like knowing a language fluently. I speak the language of vocal production / melodyne / vocal tuning very well.

  3. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  4. A: Max Martin and Pharrell are big influences on my work.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: I listen to the song a few times before I dive in on vocal tuning and production, effects or mix.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Not only do I bring strong songwriting, music and vocal production, I bring the "Radio Ready" polish that professional clients expect when readying their release. This mostly comes from perfecting the vocal tuning, vocal production, FX, mixing

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: Providing the polished radio sound / vocal production / songwriting

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: All types of music. Any genre. I love pop, dance, hip hop, edm etc.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: If it makes you nervous, but you like the way it sounds, roll with because it's probably what will set the song apart.

  15. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  16. A: I'm working with the artists that I've always wanted to work with honestly! My last goal was to work with Britney Spears, ✔ THAT OFF THE LIST! If there was one artist I have yet to work with, it would be Lady Gaga, she's not afraid to experiment with vocals!

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Innovative and futuristic. Ahead of the curve always with what's next.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started writing songs at 13, gained momentum on MySpace (2005-2007) then moved to Los Angeles in 2008. I've been published by a few major music publishers like Pulse (2009 -2012) but currently I am published by Roc Nation (2016-Present).

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Loaded Computer, Mic / XLR set up, Headphones, Midi Keybaord, Monitor set up (controller, XLRs, and speakers).

  23. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  24. A: Be prepared before coming to a producer like me. Know what it is you need to finish the record and have the files ready. Working professionally in the industry means being on your game, no one is waiting around! Time is money.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What are your goals? Do you have references that you are looking to emulate?

  27. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  28. A: The biggest misconception is that I'm just an engineer. HA! I do it all. I play the computer like an instrument while I write songs and record them into the computer. Then I do the editing and vocal production. I am an engineer at life!

  29. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  30. A: Q): "Can you make me sound like I sing good?" A): Yes and No. Have realistic expectations, quality in means quality out. The most important thing is getting a solid vocal (vox) take that we can make even better through vocal production.

  31. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  32. A: I love to create the soundtrack to the world. As music creators, we're constantly writing about the current period in which we are living in - its like documenting history and pop culture.

  33. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  34. A: You won't be disappointed! If you give me quality work, I will help you make exceptional work of it.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Digital for vocals, Analog is old school unless its a synth or something.

  37. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  38. A: Mickey Shiloh & Myah Marie are two of my closest collaborators!

  39. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  40. A: High Profile projects via Roc Nation as well as my own artist development projects.

  41. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  42. A: Britney Spears was always a goal of mine. I co-wrote and vocal produced the song "Mood Ring" for Britney. I felt like my whole life was leading to that moment when I finally got to work with her vocals. It was a dream! She's iconic.
