Interview with WestrowMusic Sebastien Chialli
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of my most successful track is called "Oh Lalala". I have composed, tracked and mix it in 2 days and it has ended on adverts for Samsung, Crayola, Target, Myer, 6ixty 8ight, Bras'n'Things, White Stuff and a couple Youtube and MTV series.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am producing an EP for a british pop singer. I write songs with the amazing Nikita KC. I just released a single with The Wickeed called "Say My Name" on Universal Music.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog tracking for warmth and character, digital mixing for speed and flexibility, Analog mastering.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will be deeply involved in your project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That feeling when you have a good idea or work on a great song!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It has happend that people think you can produce mix and master a song in one day but I have learn to communicate efficiently and clearly to avoid any bad situations.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Tell me more about you / your project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose the right person for your music. Be very clear about what you expect. Provide every infos you can.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop, LogicPro, a good pair of speakers, a mic and a guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Music is my full time job since my 20's. I started as a guitarist on a trip-hop/metal band called Munshy doing crazy sounds with multieffects pedalboards. I have produced our first record and we toured accross europe and USA. I have studied sound engineering and music production at the SAE. I have worked in many studios, composed a lot of music for artists, films or advertising.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Max Martin, Pharrell Williams and Ross Robinson are people I would really love to work with because they have been working with so many different artists they must be such an inspiring source of knowledge.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: "Less is more" is my all time favourite tip. "The best sounding gear is a good song" is a sentence I love. Tune your drums and compress in stages is a good practical tip to share!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: As a sound engineer I have mixed almost every genre you can find on the planet! From Pop to Death Metal, from world music to EDM, Trap to Classical or Jazz. As a producer it's about the same, I work on Pop, all kinds of Rock, Hip-hop and Trap but I have written classical pieces as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Empathy, understanding, involvement.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I strip the idea down to the core to catch the very essence of the music. I bring my perspective and experience to make the song as clear, dynamic and catchy as possible.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all I want to deeply understand who my client is and what is he/she after exactly. Once we have set the basis, we can start working together being sure we are on the same page.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I usually track on ProTools and produce / mix on Logic Pro. I use a combination of hardware pre-amps / compressor, high end microphones and great AD/DA converters. Most of the time I mix in the box but I love to use hardware synths and gear when appropriate.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin, Ross Robinson, Pharrell Williams, Finneas O'Connel,
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: People come to me for music production, songwriting and sound engineering. I have a genuine ability to understand what artists wants and how to help them to achieve their goal.
