Interview with Blackhead Studios

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both, because both have their advantages.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I like to work with like-minded artists and exchange musical visions.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started with djing and producing in the early 90s, then started a label in the mid 90s (Moodmusic) and eventually started Blackhead Studios in 2005. Since 2012 I have been concentrating on mixing and mastering.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Tight mixing and mastering with a focus on both club sound systems, as well as home listeners.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: All artists actually.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: If your room is not well treated or you work with smaller 2-way monitoring get yourself an analyser. It's the best investment you can, and does not cost a fortune.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: All kinds of electronic music mostly, although I love to work on acoustic music as well.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I think I can fairly well ready my clients needs, converting their music to the next level.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I always try to find our what the musician / producer is looking for in the song, trying to emphasise their vision and at the same time get a more full bodied sound with enough depth and 3D for sounding good on any system.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: First thing to do is consult the client of the right needs for the project. After initially listening and analysing the material, we discuss the process and budget and then it's pretty straightforward. Stems or premasters are delivered and I get to work.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I have a fully treated room built in the early 90s for German National Radio with full range Genelec monitoring and a analog mixing and mastering setup with gear from Maselec, Bettermaker, Handcrafted Labs, TK-Audio and some vintage gear from Telefunken and BFE.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I get inspired by lots of musicians and producers, mixers and mastering engineers. When I hear a well produced record which hits me as well musically, I try to find out who is behind it. This process is great for discovering like-minded professionals and inspiring musicians.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mixing and mastering of Electronic Music in all forms
