Interview with Mike Jimenez

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I strive to pinpoint an artists uniqueness and highlight it. I also have a knack for filling out arrangements.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: If we're not physically in the studio together I highly enjoy working together online via video chat. We can even stream the session audio in realtime high-definition. It's pretty fun and I've even had local clients do sessions this way.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: The heart of my setup is a Tree Audio recording console. Other than that I have various outboard gear from the likes of Chandler Limited, Inward Connections, API, Great River, Summit Audio. I also offer analog tape recording. 1" 8-track MCI machine. My main DAW in Pro Tools but sometimes I'll also use Reaper. My studio has a spacious live room that is great for drums and piano - here's my studio's website if you want to take a look - modernfuzz.com

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: Many come to mind for different reasons: Jon Brion - I admire his style and his knack for arranging; Ethan Johns - His recordings make you feel like you're sitting in the room while the songs being performed. A great example is Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker. some artists I like include: David Bowie, Neutral Milk Hotel + Elephant 6 in general, Sigur Ros, M. Ward, The Zombies, The Beatles, The Smiths, Queen, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Jam, ELO, The Bad Plus, The Beach Boys.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: As a session player drum tracks are my main offerings. As a Producer/Engineer most of my clients include solo artists and/or bands under the indie, punk, alternative, and rock umbrellas but I also enjoy doing styles such as hip hop and jazz. Solo artists enjoy working with me because i'm a great co-pilot; and being a multi instrumentalist; the two of us can create awesome full arrangements of their songs without having to bring in other musicians. Bands usually come to me for my experience as a producer and as a musician. I enjoy bringing the best out of others!
