Interview with V Productions
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Mainly just focusing on practicing vocals at the moment to add a new skill to my resume
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for the basics analog to finish it up and saturate the sound where needed. Audio should not sound as sterile as a doctors office.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Fitting all the pieces together and trying new stuff while meeting new people.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: It is a lot more complicated then what it sounds like
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Nothings to awkward for me
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Probably my guitar with the lack of electricity. Makes anything for mixing and mastering instant useless haha
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started at the age of 15 (2004) by playing in bands. During this time playing in bands I got into contact with someone who was 8 years older and thought me most of the basics of working in a DAW, this eventually build up to me doing my own self productions and finding a new love/interest in audio
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I had the enjoyment to work for a year in Red Bull studio, half a year as a assistant and another half as a head engineer. This gave me a chance to work with a lot of dutch EDM artists through Red Bull Music Academy. Some of these names were Ben Westbeach, Musclefarm, Joya Mooi and many more and I do have to inform these people are amazingly talented and a joy to hang out with outside of studio time.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I love thickening and layering stuff to change the vibe around a bit if I can especially in tracks which consist of only minimal musical atmospheres. EG. Just a chorus and verse. I will try and find a way to sneak in something to make the 2nd verse feel completely different yet try and keep it sounding the same.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I have way to many to name for this question haha.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Before you can break any rules you gotta understand the fundamentals
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly rock, but I tend to experiment a lot with new sounds and genres. The genre I am most interested in at the moment is Soul, which is a lot more complex especially when you have a big band idea coming in.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Mixing and Producing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I prefer to bring a bit of flair and creativity to a mix instead of just adjusting volumes if possible, but this highly depends on what my clients prefer. If the client prefers me to just focus on cleaning up the sound then thats also what I will do.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I prefer to make sure the client sends me his file and we discuss first what the idea is of the song, what kind of sound we are aiming for --reference tracks are much appreciated-- and then I will make multi idea quick mixes for the song based on the view of the client. This way I can make sure the client can get a good concept of what he does and does not like of
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I prefer a small room with a good setup over a overwhelming huge studio to focus on the music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Prodigy Periphery Celldweller
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly mix and master for clients or work on songs together with vocalists. Currently also taking classes for vocal coaching so keep a heads up guys!
