Words cannot describe Paul! I imagine it's like being able to hire Mozart! I gave him a simple two-part harmony, a cappella, based on Mozart's "Ah! Vous dirai-je, maman" ("Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"). Paul turned it into a splendid creation worthy of serving as a tribute to opera star Kathleen Battle. I had always wanted the song as a choral piece but couldn't afford a choir. Paul hired an amazing singer, Sofia Berro, of Argentina. He took her parts, and his own, and produced...my...CHOIR!

I wanted a change to a file after the job was complete. Paul quickly and kindly effected the request without making me feel as if I were an annoying customer (smile). And the file he delivered is perfect.

Paul Cecchetti is a musical GENIUS! He turned my precious song, "The Kings' Queen" (The King Family's Queen), which had been online in a cappella form for years (with 10k views), and turned it into the exquisite orchestral composition I had always known it could be...but that I thought I would never get to hear.

Paul's arrangements soar and inspire and make one cry. He adds layers of sound, of instruments, in such a masterly way that I feel transported to an actual orchestra hall.

Interview with Paul J Cecchetti

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I began doing this professionally while I studied music in university. That's 10 years and counting.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Less is more- let the music do the talking, don't try to over-complicate things.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: My orchestrations add depth and class to my client's songs. An orchestral part really helps fill up the space in a mix and take it to a whole other level.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: 80% of it is coming up with ideas. Once the idea comes online, the music writes itself.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Sebastien Petiet- Violin player in the National Concert Orchestra of Ireland. He got me started on my journey of learning about conducting and writing for orchestra. He's a stunning violinist, conductor, composer, and all round great guy. Really humble too.

  11. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  12. A: I work with Carsten Neugebauer quite a lot, he's my go-to for guitar. Awesome guy, fine musician / producer and genuine all-rounder. He rocks!

  13. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  14. A: I really enjoyed working with Cristina Botnari, violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia. She sent me this beautiful recording of a piece for violin and piano, to which I added the orchestration. It's on my soundcloud profile, I'm very proud of that one.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: 100% Satisfaction or a full refund

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: Getting to meet and work with different clients from around the world, and all the different styles of music they bring to me.

  19. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  20. A: That I just sit in the studio all day pressing the "make music" button

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Send me the track that you're working on, describe in as much detail as you can what you want the song to sound like. Include plenty of YouTube links and audio samples of music you love.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: My computer, my audio interface, my monitors, a rode NT1-A microphone, and my copy of Walter Pistons book on Orchestration!

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Lots of pop, rock, worship music, country, dance, heavy metal... All with a classical twist.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: Bands and musicians send me their unfinished tracks, and I write an orchestral part for them. I then deliver a full set of stems (Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion), which they can have mixed. I also provide a reference mix.
