Interview with Demetrius Garland - Level360
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Its definitely to see the smiles and wow factors from my clients. There is nothing like it! Knowing I made an impact in their lives is a great feeling.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My clients know that they will get professional quality and 100% satisfaction. I always put 110% into everything I do. Im not happy until they are.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Well my father was a drummer, producer, and label CEO so I grew up on the production and business side of music. Eventually it trickled on down with me showing interest in engineering as well. That is what opened me up to mixing. Professionally I have been in the music business for about 15yrs
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Aggressive. I tend to always approach things aggressively. The best sounds, the weird sounds, the uncommon sounds. I tend to build a song
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Well if I had to share one production tip it would be to always remain objective. As a producer we can easily be subjective but we often end up missing the mark. Keep focused on the goal and vision, live for the music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I like simplicity, it makes workflow much easier. With that said, I mostly work ITB (In the box). Most people would be surprised that I work soley with Windows OS which allows me to operate and build to my specs. Currently I use Presonus gear along with Studio One 3 Professional. My monitors of choice are Yamaha HS7s, and JBL- LSR8s. Other hardware and software I use includes...Akai, Waves, Arturia, Fabfilter, Avid, MAudio, ProTools, AkG, Rode.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Oh man...I get inspired by alot!! It comes from guys like John Jaszcz, Paul Salvo, Timbaland, Seth Firkins, Manny Morriquin, Dave Pensado, Hit Boy, Stokely, Shep Crawford, Quincy Jones, Teddy Riley, Vince Herbert, Pharrell...I could go on for days.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do is mixing. I get my hands dirty with alot, but mixing always seems to be the more often service.
