Chan Leonard on SoundBetter

I'm Chan Leonard/ChanEpic, a music producer and recording/mixing engineer with 20+ years of professional audio experience. I blend technical precision with musical creativity to help artists discover their sound, elevate their performances, and create records that connect. From first idea to final mix, I'm all about making music that moves people.

I'm ChanEpic, a music producer, recording and mixing engineer, and creative collaborator with over 20 years of experience in professional audio. I believe great music isn't just about how it sounds. It's about how it makes you feel.

My specialty is helping artists take their music beyond the ordinary. Whether we're developing a song from the ground up, exploring new arrangements, capturing an unforgettable vocal performance, or putting the finishing touches on a mix, I bring both technical expertise and a creative perspective to every project.

I work out of The Shire TLH, a professional recording studio in Tallahassee, Florida, where I've built a space that encourages experimentation, collaboration, and exceptional sound. I also work remotely with artists who need production, editing, or mixing services.

I'm passionate about the details, but I never lose sight of the bigger picture: the song, the artist, and the emotion we're trying to communicate. I don't believe in forcing every artist into the same formula. I want to understand your vision, challenge you creatively when it makes sense, and help you make something that's unmistakably yours.

When you work with me, you're getting more than an engineer behind a console. You're getting a creative partner who's invested in your music.

Let's make something worth listening to.

Interview with Chan Leonard

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I served as executive producer on the MoonTransmissions project. We recorded this album all over the US and mixed it in Nashville with one of my heroes Mark Needham. The music is amazing and the experience changed me for the better. I also record and mix my wife's band Once Great estate and I love them.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: An indie band names MRKOS. They are the hardest indie-rock I have ever had the pleasure of working on.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Maybe, I still need to do some research.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: BOTH, because in my studio I don't have to pick and use them both every single project.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will always do what I saw and when I say it.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Being with artistic people. I cannot get enough of those times.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much? My Answer: It depends on the goals and desired outcome.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That studio work is all fun and games. It is SUPER fun but 80% of the time it is practicing psychology.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When we are done, what would you like to feel about this song?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure you are on the same page about the direction the project needs to go before doing anything. Pre-Production is VITAL to a successful project.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My Telefunken Mics, My API 529, my BURL converters, my GroveTube Supre and my laptop. In a desert island situation that's all I would need.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I went to film school and learned basic multimedia practices. I have been making music since my teens, which was a VERY long time ago.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Laid back but focused. I enjoy the time together with artists so my style would be "Friendly advisor".

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would kill to work with Michael Jackson, because he was so talented all I would need to do is make sure the mic isn't clipping.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Make sure you're coming into the project with a clear goal and don't stop until you get there. No compromises on quality.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on everything.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Communications. I am big on communicating and connecting through good comms.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Enthusiasm, professionalism and experience. I've done it all from orchestral, Hiphop, country, pop and jazz. I love music, I love making it and I love the feeling we get when we make our audience smile. It's addictive.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My work process is to first, vibe with the artists. I want to know what they like and what makes them feel. Then we discuss references and inspiration. After we're all on the same page, the real work begins.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
