Interview with Herningway
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Punk, i don't think that everything needs to be perfect, not every hit of the snare needs to be the exact same, not every kick hit needs to hit the same, sometimes it's best to leave things be, as long as it works musically of course.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with a Bad Religion at some point. They've always been one of my favorites, so to work with them would be killer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overthink it, if you have to add a million plugins to make it sound good then you probably did something wrong. Just keep it simple, and trust yourself
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm very straightforward with everything I do, If I don't think that something works I will tell you, I'm also very open to trying out something weird within that because hey maybe it does work and it'll end up sounding cool.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to bring a very lively and natural feel to the song. I hate it when songs sound like they were tracked to be perfect, because it takes out from the humanness of the art.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to keep things simple, usually drums are tracked live w/ guitar and bass DI. From there we retrack the guitar and bass, and then vocals after that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Its's a garage studio, It's a nice setup, The walls in it were pre-treated and I get a very raw and lively sound from the room. I don't do anything over-produced, I want everything to feel natural, and really capture the music in that moment. There isn't any dedicated mixing room, just one space for everything.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I really love punk and hardcore, they're 2 of my favorite kinds of music, I'm very inspired by bands like rancid, NOFX, Bad Religion, BIG ASS TRUCK IE, and others like that
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording and mixing mostly, I'm not much of a mastering engineer but I know how to do it.
