Interview with Jim Johnson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My latest project, Taxation, it’s on bandcamp and spotify with one single - Me and and partner are making some heavenly music together as she plays piano / synth and makes edits and give art direction - I feel the music is sharp as it’s ever been.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Scoring a parody “90s” slasher, it’s fun!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I’m not active that often here.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both; time and places.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: They will enjoy their product or I will not stop till they do.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Collaboration.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How long have you been doing this? Enough to be competent at it / enough for you to hire me. Usually with a laugh.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I don’t help in every part of the process; I’m always there because I care.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What the grandiose version of this? Are we going for that? How many levels down? Why? Can you verbalize what it would feel like in the moment, the stillness or loudness, what items are around you, ect

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: I’m not sure, I don’t market myself traditionally it’s words of mouth. But I’m here. DM me, I keep it lowkey online @postscribed on instagram.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Arturia Drumbrute, Juno60, a thrift store mic, a danoelectro, and a classical guitar - Percussion would just be rocks or wood.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I am not sure, that’s why I am here, right? Started on garageband with loops when I was 10 or so and i’m 28.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Rough around the edges with purpose, I often clean that up for a client but my own music is lofi indie, sincere, recorded in that exact moment.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: David Byrne or Isaac Brock; I just feel as if we would get along well. Advice would come naturally, I wouldn’t seek it out.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Basic one but has helped ever since I heard it; turn your headphones down when mixing, all the way down. In monitors when turned back up it’ll typically sound better. Also, compression is often overused.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Indie film scoring, Indie rock, lofi alternative, slowcore, ambient, cinematic, folk and country - singer songwriter at my core however

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Producing something based off of adjectives of another.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Curation of the vibe to the edge of parody but remaining in tribute; I can dial it back but I can fully engulf myself in a particular moment and hyper fixate that moment with music.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Depends on the project.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Mac Mini M3, FocusRight, Too many guitars, Too many synth plugins and VOX plug ins, Arturia MIDI keys, too many guitars, ect.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Conceptualization into a concrete idea or “scene” or minds eye visual of what sonically the product should should and feel like.
