Interview with Ratatoy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The project I'm proudest of is the one I've got linked on my profile — I wrote every bit of the guitar from scratch for a client who didn't have much of a music background themselves. Taking it from nothing to a finished part start to finish is what made it special
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm working through some technical guitar challenges just for myself — learning things like the guitar battle from the movie Crossroads, purely for fun and to push my own playing.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not on SoundBetter specifically yet, but I know great people on other platforms I've worked with.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I used to be strictly analog, but I've switched over to digital — the quality nowadays is so good there's really no reason not to.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That they'll always walk away satisfied with what they get.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Seeing people's reaction at the end — that moment of real satisfaction when they hear it come together.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common question is how fast I can turn things around. My answer is always the same day — I drop what I'm doing and get straight into the project.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it could be replaced by AI. I don't think it can — how someone plays is basically a fingerprint. No two players hit a note the same way.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Mainly where they want me to bring my own ideas and where they'd rather I stick closely to a script or reference they already have in mind.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go in with a clear idea of where you want the player to bring their own creativity and where you want them to just follow your lead — having that clarity upfront makes everything go smoother.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A guitar, an amp, a pick, and the rest would be pedals.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been playing guitar for as long as I can remember — basically since I could walk.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Old-school guitar at its core, with some modern shredding mixed in.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Slash — I feel like he'd let you bring your own thing to the table rather than boxing you in.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Play through the part a few times before you actually hit record — it takes the edge off your nerves and the take comes out more natural.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly chill rock and blues.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Finding the balance between playing something that sounds impressive and knowing when to hold back — keeping the guitar in service of the song rather than stepping on it.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A solo or guitar section that really highlights the theme of the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'll listen to the song throughout the day so I already have ideas forming by the time I sit down at my workstation. Then I try out different approaches almost like a live studio session before I actually commit anything to a take.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: It's a bedroom setup, but a professional one — high-quality mics and interfaces, just built for recording one person rather than a full band.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: John Mayer — he's someone who really does his own thing, very much on his own terms.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Adding guitar solos to songs.
