Interview with Nery Fexa
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often ask about my vocal style, musical genres, recording quality, turnaround time, and whether I can adapt my voice to a specific song or reference. They also commonly ask about lead vocals, harmonies, backing vocals, flute recordings, revisions, and the file formats I deliver.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that being a great singer is only about having a good voice. I believe great vocals are about much more: emotion, musicality, interpretation, timing, and understanding the story of the song. My goal is not just to sing the notes, but to make the song feel alive.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the style and overall vision for the song? Do you have a reference track or vocal style in mind? What key and tempo is the song in? Do you need lead vocals, harmonies, backing vocals, flute, or vocal production? What format and file specifications do you need? What is your deadline, and are there any specific creative details you would like me to follow?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Choose a musician who understands your vision, communicates clearly, and can bring genuine emotion to your song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My microphone, audio interface, headphones, laptop with my DAW, and my flute. Give me those five things and I can turn almost anywhere into a recording studio.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working professionally in music for several years as a singer, vocalist, and performer. From 2019 to 2023, I worked with Salsa Caribe in China, performing a wide range of musical genres in professional live settings. My career has continued to grow through singing, flute, music production, and remote recording, allowing me to bring both performance experience and musical versatility to every project.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is versatile, expressive, and emotionally driven. I blend the energy of Latin and Pop with a warm, soulful vocal character, adapting my sound to each song while keeping the performance authentic and musical.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Gloria Estefan because her music blends Latin rhythms, pop, and powerful vocal expression. I admire the way she connects different musical cultures while keeping her sound authentic, energetic, and emotional. Her style inspires me to bring the same versatility and passion to every project.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always prioritize the emotion of the performance before the technical details. A clean recording is important, but the right vocal delivery, dynamics, and feeling are what truly make a song connect with the listener.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Pop, Latin, Salsa, Tropical, R&B, and Soul, while remaining versatile and comfortable exploring different styles depending on the project.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is delivering expressive, versatile vocals that bring emotion and personality to a song while adapting naturally to different musical styles.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotion, musicality, versatility, and a distinctive vocal character to every song. I focus on delivering expressive performances that connect with the listener while respecting the artist’s vision. Whether it’s lead vocals, harmonies, or flute, I add personality, dynamics, and authentic musical feeling to the production.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by discussing the client’s vision, references, style, key, tempo, and project requirements. Once everything is clear, I record the vocals or flute parts in my studio and carefully edit the performance while keeping it natural and expressive. I then review the recording, make any agreed revisions, and deliver clean, high-quality files ready for mixing and production.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a dedicated home studio designed for professional vocal and instrumental recording. My setup includes a quality studio microphone, audio interface, studio headphones, monitoring system, and professional DAW for recording and production. I use this setup to deliver clean, detailed vocals, harmonies, and flute recordings remotely. I focus on capturing natural expression, clarity, and a polished sound for every project.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Marc Anthony, Selena, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Juan Luis Guerra.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most commonly work as a session vocalist, recording lead vocals, backing vocals, and harmonies for artists, producers, and songwriters. I also provide flute recordings and vocal production for pop, Latin, salsa, and other musical styles.
