Interview with ALX
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm particularly proud of the work I've done with BatsyStyll. I've worked closely with him across multiple songs and a project, and I've mixed and mastered every song of his that has been released. I'm proud of that work because it gave me the opportunity to be involved beyond simply making a beat. I was able to work directly with an artist, understand their sound, contribute to the production process, and make sure the final records were properly mixed and mastered. It's the kind of relationship I want to continue building with independent artists, working together over multiple projects and helping develop their sound over time.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently focused on continuously developing my Detroit and trap production, expanding my catalog, and working with more independent and up-and-coming artists. I'm also continuing to release beats consistently through my YouTube and BeatStars platforms while improving my composition, piano skills and music theory. Long term, I want to keep developing my own sound while helping artists develop theirs.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm still relatively new to building my network on SoundBetter, so I don't currently have anyone on the platform that I can personally recommend based on direct experience. I'm definitely interested in connecting with other producers, engineers, artists and musicians on the platform and building those relationships over time.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I love how accessible production has become because of digital technology. I can have an entire production setup with me and create almost anywhere without needing a huge studio. For me, the technology is less important than what you do with it. Digital tools give me the flexibility to experiment, learn, create quickly and continuously develop my sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I want every client to feel like they're getting more than just a transaction. I genuinely want to help artists develop their music and get the best result possible from their investment. I'll listen to their vision, communicate clearly, put real thought into the production, and do my best to make the final result something they're proud of. My goal is to build genuine long-term relationships with artists and people I can continue creating with.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being able to express my ideas through music, which has become one of my biggest passions. I also really enjoy working with other like-minded people who have their own goals and aspirations in music. Being able to take someone's idea and contribute something that helps them develop their sound is one of my favourite parts of producing.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients commonly ask about revisions, licensing, file formats, customization and how the production process works. I offer different revision amounts depending on the service or license, and I'm happy to discuss additional revisions when needed. The most helpful thing a client can do is give detailed feedback. The more clearly they can explain what they want changed or what isn't working for them, the better I can understand their vision and make the right changes.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that making beats is easy because the basic process can look simple from the outside. Creating a beat is only one part of it. Developing a consistent style requires a lot of repetition, research, experimentation, sound selection, arrangement, mixing, and creative problem-solving. You have to constantly figure out what works, what doesn't, and how to turn that knowledge into a sound that is both consistent and your own.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask what kind of song they're trying to create, which artists or songs they want to take inspiration from, how much creative freedom they want me to have, and whether there are any specific sounds, instruments or ideas they want included or avoided. If they have existing demos or previous songs, I'll also ask for those so I can understand their sound and tailor the production around their voice and style.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I'd recommend finding someone who is actually interested in understanding your sound rather than just trying to sell you something. Have a few reference songs ready and be clear about what you like and don't like, but also give the producer some creative freedom. Most importantly, find someone you can build a genuine working relationship with. The best music usually comes from people understanding each other's creative vision and developing that together over time.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I'd take my laptop with FL Studio, my Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X headphones, my Novation FLkey 49, Nexus, and Kontakt 8. Those would give me everything I'd need to keep producing and composing. I'd probably also use the time to work on my piano skills and music theory, which I'm currently taking lessons to improve.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been producing for around 2 years now and have spent that time consistently developing my sound, releasing music and working with artists. I started producing because of my interest in hip-hop and producers like Chopsquad DJ, and I've continued developing through constant practice, experimentation and studying the music I listen to. I've built my production presence through my YouTube and BeatStars catalog, consistently releasing new beats, while also working directly with independent artists on their songs and projects.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'd describe my style as hard, melodic, bouncy and confident. I like my beats to develop throughout the track rather than staying completely static or repetitive. I'll add changes, drops, melodies or other details where they make sense, but I always try to maintain the core rhythm and structure so the artist still has room to perform.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Babyfxce E. I've spent a lot of time developing my Detroit, Flint, Rio Da Yung OG/Babyfxce E inspired production, and I think his delivery works extremely well with the type of beats I enjoy making. I'd love the opportunity to create something specifically around his sound while still bringing my own production style to the record.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A clean mix will almost always translate better than simply making everything louder. I like my beats to hit hard, especially the 808s and drums, but every element still needs its own space. If you boost an 808 until it overwhelms everything else, the beat might sound powerful on one system but fall apart on another. Balance and clarity are just as important as impact.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Detroit, Flint/Michigan, and modern Trap Type Beats. My production is generally hard, melodic, bouncy and confident, with influences from both Detroit and modern Trap.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'd say my strongest skill is creating full beats from scratch that have a strong bounce and sense of progression. I enjoy taking a basic idea and developing it into a complete production with melodies, drums, drops and different sections that keep the listener engaged without losing the core feel of the beat.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a hard, melodic and bouncy production style with an emphasis on progression. I like creating beats that have strong drops and memorable moments, but I also make sure the production doesn't become so complicated that it gets in the way of the artist. My goal is to give the artist a beat that feels complete and interesting while still giving them plenty of room to make the record their own.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding the artist and what they're trying to create. I'll usually ask for reference songs, demos, previous songs, or anything else that gives me an idea of their sound. I'll also ask how much creative freedom they want and whether there are any specific elements they want included or avoided. From there, I build the production from scratch and develop it as the beat progresses. I like my beats to evolve rather than feeling like the same loop repeated over and over, while still keeping a clear core structure and enough space for the artist to record. Once the production is finished, I focus on getting a clean, balanced mix where every important element can be heard.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My main setup is built around FL Studio, a Novation FLkey 49, a Rode NT1 5th Generation microphone, and Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X headphones. I keep my setup fairly focused around production and mixing rather than having unnecessary equipment. I'm also continuously improving my piano skills and music theory, which has become an important part of developing my production and composition.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Chopsquad DJ is probably my biggest production inspiration and one of the main reasons I started producing. I'm also heavily influenced by artists such as A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, King Von, Lil Durk, Lil Baby, and Babyfxce E. I pay a lot of attention to how producers create a recognizable sound while still leaving enough room for an artist's personality.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly create custom Detroit and Trap Type Beats for independent and up-and-coming artists. A lot of my clients initially find me through my YouTube and BeatStars catalog, but I also work directly with artists on custom productions and full projects. I also have experience mixing and mastering released records, including an entire catalog of songs for an independent artist I've worked closely with.
