Interview with Daniel Urzola
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I'm working on my project 'Soneros del Pixel', which is a collection of different video game music themes reimagined and arranged as different Latin American genres and styles of music. You can find us on Instagram. I'm the arranger, orchestrator and bandleader.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Although every idea is welcome, cohesion through all stages of production is key.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on music for large-scale ensembles, such as orchestras, marching bands, big bands, Latin big bands, choirs etc. Genres vary greatly but I'd say I work mainly on Latin fusion, cinematic orchestral, chiptunes and sound ambience.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Being a professional composer in my city has helped build a sensitivity for small details that can help songs stand out more, such as musical coherence, expertise in different musical instruments and their non-standard sounds and applications, wide knowledge in different music genres (specially Latin American genres), complexity and variety in harmonies and rhythms and great efficiency at applying all this knowledge when actually producing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is first to align my vision with my client's by having meetings, choosing references, define general settings and musical elements, define prices and then start working on projects. I like to maintain constant communication with my clients so the vision is always achieved. These back-and-forth questions aren't counted as revisions. Revisions are counted when I deliver a first mix of the song or project, for my clients to approve and then move on to mastering.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I follow mainly game composers and Latin American musicians, who have shaped as well the sound of my music. Some of these are Austin Wintory, Nobuo Uematsu, Los Van Van, Héctor Lavoe and Buena Vista Social Club.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: For clients, the most common type of work I do is full music productions, from conception to master. I usually like to include live instruments into the productions for a more unique sound.
