Interview with Ailis
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Yes! As gross as it is, I love to track with no reverb or delay on my vocals, maybe just an LA-2A. I find that reverb removes the finer details from your voice, so tracking without it makes the performances so much better because you can hear every nuance. It takes a while to get used to but it's so worth it!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I sang in an indie rock band up until a couple months back. We supported the likes of Louis Tomlinson, Sam Fender, Sex Pistols and more, so that's what I'd say I'm known for. My voice is a machine for pop too, so that's probably what surprises people the most.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I love how my voice has both soprano and alto qualities - it gives me a lot of versatility with genres and within individual songs. People can get a totally unique vocal that is specifically for their vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'm the final touch that gives your track colour and soul. I do not sound exactly like any particular artist, so my voice gives the song individuality, but I can also dial it back for a demo so it gives scope for an artist to make it their own.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I make myself a herbal tea and get the mood right in my studio and then I track four takes. I then listen back to each take and compare to the reference tracks and I further refine. I'd say that I usually do about 20 takes to make sure I can get the perfect comp. I listen to the vocals dry so I can hear every single detail in each take and I then play around with FX.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I did a mic shoot out recently and my voice really suits a C414, so I have one of those sat in my vocal booth which is connected to a UAD interface... and I love blasting my mixes through my Hedd Type 07s!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love people who think outside the box with crazy attention to detail. Did you know PinkPanthress sings in a particular way to cut the low end out her voice because she wants to leave as much room for the low end frequencies as possible? I love that kind of energy!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do a ton of vocal tracking work! I'm often commissioned to track & produce rock and pop vocal toplines - whether that's from a MIDI melody with lyrics or an AI voice my clients want to sound human. Everything on my sample audio are songs I've written so I'd love to write for more people!
