Syra

R&B Neo-Soul Vocalist/Topliner

Syra on SoundBetter

I specialize in Neo-Soul, R&B, and acoustic soul. Whether you need a lead vocal, lush harmonies, ad-libs, or a memorable topline, my goal is always the same: to help bring your vision to life.

As a singer, I listen closely to what the song is asking for and build a performance around its unique story. As a songwriter, I love crafting melodies and lyrics that make people feel or evoke something in them.

Services:
- Lead vocals
- Harmonies, doubles & ad-libs
- Toplining (melody + lyrics)
- Vocal arrangements
- Demo vocals
- Session Vocals for Sync & Media

After discussing your project, I'll record my vocals and send you a rough mix for approval.

Interview with Syra

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Alongside collaborating with other artists, I'm also writing and recording original music for my own artist project. It's been a rewarding way to continue growing as both a vocalist and songwriter while bringing that experience into the projects I collaborate on.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. I like the flexibility of digital but I love the rawness of the classic recordings that captured the performances as is. It took a lot of skill and musicianship in other ways to do analogue!

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I'll treat your song with the same care and attention I'd give my own. You can expect thoughtful communication, professionalism, and a genuine commitment to creating something we're both proud of.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love the creative process of coming up with something out of "thin air." When the right idea (melody, lyric, or arrangement) hits, it's such a magical feeling.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That natural talent is all it takes. In reality, there's so much more to being a great singer/songwriter. It takes a lot of effort, constant learning, and cultivating the natural talent. It also takes having the right mindset and knowledge about the business to be successful.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: I'd ask for reference tracks or reference artists so I can get a sense of the vibe the clients are going for.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Be meticulous, but also don't forget to step away so you can listen to the music more objectively. Ear/brain fatigue is real!

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I love finding the emotional center of a song. Whether that's through a memorable melody, expressive phrasing, rich harmonies, or subtle vocal textures, I'm always listening for what will make the song feel more complete. My goal isn't simply to sing well, it's to help create something listeners connect with.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Once we've discussed your vision, I'll review your track and any reference songs you'd like me to consider. I'll record the vocals in my home studio and send you an MP3 rough mix for feedback/approval. One round of revisions is included for small adjustments, and once you're happy with everything, I'll deliver edited and tuned 24-bit/48 kHz WAV stems ready for mixing.

  19. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  20. A: I primarily provide lead vocals, harmonies, ad-libs, and toplines for Neo-Soul, R&B, and Contemporary Gospel projects. Whether I'm singing an existing melody or creating one from scratch, my goal is always to serve the song and help bring the artist's vision to life.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Mic, interface, laptop, MIDI keyboard, headphones!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been doing this for a while. Music does not let me go!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I have a soulful, intimate, and emotional style of singing. My vocals can be soft but also intense and passionate at different times. My writing comes from a raw, vulnerable, and authentic place.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Jonathan McReynolds and Norah Jones. I just love Jonathan's voice and his songs so much. I love his sincerity, skills, tone, and songwriting. I would love to write songs with him! I think Norah Jones has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, and I love how she sings! It would be my dream come true to have her sign one of my songs!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on soul and R&B but some of my ballads have a more pop flair.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Bringing words from a deep, vulnerable, and authentic place to create melodies that make you feel something inside.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My vocals are tracked inside Logic Pro using a Shure SM7B dynamic microphone running through a Focusrite i2i audio interface.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Jonathan McReynolds, Kim Burrell, Stevie Wonder, J Moss, Warryn Campbell, India Arie, Take 6, Daniel Caesar, John Mayer, Andre Harris, Keith Pelzer, Babyface, Jummy Jam & Tery Lewis, Timbaland, The Underdogs, Tim & Bob, Polow da Don and Blac Elvis, and many more!
