Riley Brutvan

Pop Guitarist & Mix Engineer

Riley Brutvan on SoundBetter

I'm a session guitarist fluent in a wide variety of styles and a remote mixing engineer prepared to tackle any of your remote studio needs!

Session Guitarist:
My studio experience makes me a highly qualified studio guitarist. If you want parts that are performed to the highest standards, that are artfully layered, and that are played with intent, then I think you would like my work. I offer electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and bass across a wide range of styles, from country and rock to R&B and pop. I look for as much input from the artist as possible, so we will have a thorough discussion about goals and expectations before the start of any project. Here is where you will outline the number of tracks you would like on your song, how you would like the tracks delivered (stereo stems, whether or not you would like dry DI tracks included, file type, etc.) and the style in which you would like them to be played. Reference tracks are always helpful!

Mix Engineer:
I also offer remote mixing services as part of my work with Dirt Floor Recording Studio in CT, who provide access to a wealth of instruments and microphones used in my process. As a graduate from music school with degrees in music production and composition, I am happy to offer string arranging and beat arranging/production as a service as well. Pricing for all services I offer can be found below. Learn more about me at riley_brutvan_music on Instagram!

Interview with Riley Brutvan

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My biggest project this month has been putting together an EPK for a local band that I am involved with in Hartford, CT.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I love seeing what people are working on! I love being surprised by new and exciting sounds, and I love being a part of transforming a song into a finished track. It has never gotten old, and I don't expect it to ever get old.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Do you have a clear vision for your end product?

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is melodic, clean, and musical. My roots as a guitarist were in classic rock, so my playing is founded on energy, but my tastes have driven me more towards blues, R&B, and pop, so i've gotten to lean into more soulful and more polished styles as I found my own sound. I enjoy using the guitar to layer parts to create sonic textures that defy what we are conditioned to expect guitars to sound like.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: My greatest strength is my musical ear. I have been training my ear in the world of music for almost my entire life. One of the things that I think I am best at is coming up with guitar parts (and parts for other instruments) that are musically interesting and that sit well among each other in an appropriate way within the track. My ear is what guides my focus as I am mixing a track too, helping me determine what the focus of a track should be at any given moment in the song.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: When a client wants to work with me, they will send me a request. I like to follow up with them and have a discussion about the scope of their project to get as many details as possible. For guitar work, I like to know the genre of the track, what kind of reference tracks they want to use to guide the sound, how many guitar parts they want recorded, and what format they would like them delivered in. Fortunately I can offer a quick turnaround time when I work from home, so guitar parts can usually be delivered in a day or two. This is especially true during the week when I am not as busy with live gigs.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: At home I have a mixing and recording setup that includes a good set of listening monitors and a well treated room. I prefer to mix entirely in the box. This is where all of my guitar equipment lives as well, from all of my amps and guitars to the smaller things like mic stands and percussion instruments. My secondary work location is Dirt Floor Recording Studio, a folk-music lover's heaven. This is my preferred location for doing mix work since I can use a Neve console here as well as any outboard equipment I might desire.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I like to draw inspiration from all those around me. There is always more to learn! The guitarists who have inspired me the most include Mateus Asato, Greg Howe, Steve Lukather, David Gilmore, and Eric Johnson. Records that have inspired my production tastes include Deeper Well by Kasey Musgraves and Garden State by Jeremy Zucker.
