Interview with Rey Fonder
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Joachim Garraud last album 96/24, It my first major placement. It was crazy meeting him. We actually did the session through Skype. I recorded on Logic and He on Ableton. We were sending files back n forth and I was mixing along with recording my Vox and he was producing. The record ended up being the first song on the Album.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Demos for Ultra Music Publishing
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don't know anyone on SoundBetter yet. I will research more once I get done with this interview lol.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I like analog for the warmth. I like Digital for the efficiency, the crispy type sound and the space it doesn't take up.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To give them the best work possible and keep the communication open. Customers come first.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Well, I'm a entrepreneur so I have flexibility to take on a client when others cannot.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Whats your turnaround time? I answer usually 48hrs depending on how organize everything you send me is.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That there is only one right way to mix a record.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What DAW did they record on? Do they have the 2-track WAV instrumental, or the beat stems along with the vocal stems? (Either is fine) When do they need the mix finished by? Who are some of their favorite artist, and what sound are they looking for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would tell them that I'm very efficient and always looking to learn so lets keep the communication open!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Blue Mic, Imac, external hard drive, Apogee duet, Some good Headphones lol
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Well I didn't start music until college. I was dating this young lady that was signed with Compound (Ne-Yo Label), where I was able to be a fly on the wall and learn the basics of songwriting. From there went to engineering school @ SAE Institute and after that went to Full Sail to get my Masters in Marketing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Diverse, very open to different genres and my music is more like storytelling.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Kanye West or John Bellion. They are totally creative and keep it fresh.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't use too much compression and make sure whatever project you take on that there is enough space in the mix for the vocals, cause the vox are a instrument too.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip hop, Pop, R&B
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Perspective. I am a songwriter myself, so I'm always thinking about the listener.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a analog type ear. I enjoy the music thats not overly processed or compressed. I like to let my mixes breathe and add warmth to them, so they feel good.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Well I get all the stems from the client. I see what examples they have of how they want it to sound or I go study their past records. I organize everything in the session. I Usually start with the Vocals or drums first. Then I attack the rest of the song
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I keep a simple setup for my mixing. I have some Yamaha HS8 monitors, Apogee interface, IMac, equipped with Pro Tools and Logic.X Pro, and the latest plugins (Waves, Lexicon, Abbey Road, Antares plugins, Focusrite, Izotope)
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Musicians like The Dungeon Family from Atlanta always inspired me with the warm sound they were always able to achieve. Artists like Coldplay, Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Outkast are some of my favorites when it comes to how the records sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Well I do mostly Mixing and mastering. Sometimes I get flown out by clients and record them also.
