Interview with J4way
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I’m most proud of is my own music. As both an artist and engineer, I’ve had the opportunity to handle every stage of the creative process—from recording and vocal production to mixing and mastering. Working on my own releases has taught me how to make critical decisions that serve both the artist and the listener. That experience allows me to better understand my clients’ goals and deliver records that are emotionally engaging, sonically competitive, and ready for today’s streaming platforms.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently focused on expanding my mixing and mastering portfolio while continuing to develop my work as an independent artist. I’m working on a variety of Hip-Hop, Rap, R&B, and melodic records, helping artists achieve polished, release-ready sound quality. Alongside client work, I’m constantly refining my production techniques, testing new workflows, and staying current with modern industry standards to deliver the best possible results.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: SoundBetter is home to many talented professionals across multiple specialties. I always encourage artists to choose providers based on experience, communication, portfolio quality, and how well they understand the artist’s vision. Finding the right creative fit is often more important than simply choosing the most popular name.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I appreciate both, but I primarily work in the digital domain because of its precision, flexibility, and ability to consistently deliver professional results. Modern digital tools allow me to achieve the warmth, depth, and character associated with analog equipment while maintaining speed, recall, and efficiency throughout the production process.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is simple: every project receives my full attention, honest communication, and the highest level of care possible. I will always work to understand your vision, deliver professional-quality results, and treat your music with the same respect and dedication I give my own records.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is helping artists hear their vision come to life. There’s nothing more rewarding than taking a rough idea or unfinished record and transforming it into something powerful, polished, and ready to be shared with the world. Music is emotional, and being part of that creative process is what motivates me every day.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: A common question is, “Can you make my song sound industry-ready?” My answer is yes—but industry quality comes from a combination of performance, recording quality, arrangement, and engineering. My goal is to create a polished, competitive sound while maintaining the character and emotion that makes your music unique.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that mixing and mastering can fix everything. Great engineering can elevate a record significantly, but the strongest results always come from a great performance, quality recordings, and a clear artistic vision. My job is to enhance and maximize the potential that’s already there while bringing the track to a professional standard.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Before starting a project, I like to understand the artist’s vision. I typically ask what sound they’re aiming for, who their reference artists are, where the song will be released, and what they feel the track is currently missing. Understanding the goal allows me to make production decisions that support the record rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look beyond pricing and focus on communication, consistency, and results. A great engineer should understand your vision, communicate clearly, and know how to enhance your sound without changing your identity as an artist. Always listen to previous work, ask questions, and choose someone who genuinely cares about the success of your project—not just completing another job.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Mac-based production workstation Logic Pro A professional audio interface Studio headphones for critical listening A quality condenser microphone With those five tools, I could continue creating, recording, mixing, and mastering from virtually anywhere.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been involved in music production, recording, mixing, and mastering for over six years. My journey began as an artist, which naturally led me into audio engineering and sound design. Over time, I became passionate about understanding the technical side of music and developing the skills needed to create professional-quality records. Today, I help artists transform raw recordings into polished releases that are ready for streaming platforms, radio, and commercial distribution.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is modern, clean, impactful, and emotionally driven. I focus on creating depth, clarity, and energy while ensuring every element serves the song. Whether the goal is a hard-hitting commercial record or a more intimate and emotional performance, I approach every mix with the intention of making the listener feel something from the very first second.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists who continuously push creative boundaries and aren’t afraid to experiment with their sound. Artists like Travis Scott, Future, Don Toliver, The Weeknd, and Post Malone inspire me because they combine strong emotion, unique sonic textures, and commercial appeal. My passion is helping artists create records that feel timeless while still sounding current.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on the performance before the plugins. A great recording will always outperform a heavily processed recording. Capturing the right emotion, delivery, and energy at the source creates a stronger foundation and often requires less correction during the mixing and mastering stages.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on Hip-Hop, Rap, Trap, R&B, Melodic Rap, Pop, and Alternative records. As both an artist and engineer, I understand how important it is to preserve the emotion and identity of a song while elevating it to professional standards. Whether you’re creating an aggressive club record, a melodic anthem, or an emotional storytelling track, my goal is to deliver a polished, competitive sound that translates across all streaming platforms.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is translating an artist’s vision into a professional, commercial-quality sound. I have a strong ear for balance, vocal clarity, depth, and impact, allowing me to create mixes and masters that feel polished, engaging, and ready for today’s streaming platforms and industry standards.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a combination of technical expertise, creativity, and attention to detail. Beyond achieving a clean and competitive mix, I focus on enhancing the emotion, energy, and overall experience of the record. My goal is to help every song reach its fullest potential while preserving the artist’s originality and message.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every project begins with understanding the artist’s vision and desired sound. I carefully analyze the track, identify opportunities for improvement, and apply professional mixing and mastering techniques to enhance clarity, balance, energy, and emotional impact. Throughout the process, I maintain clear communication and provide updates to ensure the final product exceeds expectations.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I operate from a dedicated home studio in Atlanta, Georgia, using professional industry-standard software and plugins. My setup is optimized for recording, mixing, mastering, vocal production, and critical listening. I continuously invest in my tools, workflow, and education to ensure every project receives the highest level of attention and quality.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by engineers and producers who consistently push records to industry standards while preserving the artist’s authenticity. I admire professionals who focus on sonic excellence, creative innovation, and emotional impact. My goal is to blend technical precision with artistic expression to create records that connect with listeners and stand alongside today’s top releases.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in professional vocal mixing, mastering, and post-production for artists looking to achieve a polished, radio-ready sound. Whether it’s hip-hop, rap, R&B, pop, or melodic records, I help bring clarity, impact, and emotion to every track while maintaining the artist’s unique identity and vision.
