Interview with Jake Rae
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: A song I wrote, recorded, and produced called 'Inara', which is available on Spotify and YouTube under my band name 'Severnaya'. I got to use a range of instruments I don't normally use (strings, mandolin), and was totally blown away by the vocal performances of the singers.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: An original alternative rock piece in open C tuning.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I haven't gotten to know anybody on here, yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Whatever is necessary to achieve the desired sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll invest fully in your song and will happily provide multiple takes and options to choose from.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What inspired you to write the song? What message are you trying to get across? What sort of headspace or atmosphere does the music put you in?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Help me understand the emotions you want to convey in the song.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I'm too pragmatic to worry about music gear in a survival situation.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I began playing guitar at 12, and by 14, I was regularly performing live at a blues bar's open mic night, learning to jam with much older players from whom I learned a lot. I've spent time doing covers and playing originals, and had the opportunity to play at the same great locations, such as Magnetic Island in Townsville, where I did a 50's/60's rock'n'roll residency.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: At my core, I would call myself a rock guitarist, but my influences range from Beethoven and Muse to Enya, Pantera, Albert Lee, Alain Johannes, and Soundgarden. I enjoy all styles, and I try to incorporate those influences into my playing where I can.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Steve Morse. He was the catalyst for me deciding to take guitar seriously at a young age.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Having the guitars panned 75% in the verses and 100% in the choruses, can create space and dynamics
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, hard rock, and alternative rock are what I gravitate to most, but I also play country and metal, golden oldies rock n roll.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Capturing an atmopshere.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can deliver a solid guitar and bass track if needed, but what I bring is my own unique expressive way of playing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to converse with the person I'm working with to understand the atmosphere they want to create. I listen to a song, see what headspace it puts me in, and work from there.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Focusrite Solo 4 and run through Reaper
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Steve Morse, Malcolm Young, Brendan O'Brien
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Guitar rhythm+lead, bass.
