Interview with Jamaine Brown

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I am especially proud of is my ongoing work in artist development and production where I help emerging artists take early stage ideas and turn them into fully realised release ready tracks In these projects my role is often multi layered I am involved in production arrangement sound design mixing and sometimes mastering as well as guiding the overall creative direction of the record What makes this work stand out for me is seeing the full transformation from a rough idea or demo into a polished track that genuinely represents the artist at a professional level I am particularly proud of these projects because they combine everything I have learned over the years from underground DJ culture to modern production techniques and academic study and allow me to apply it in a way that directly supports an artist’s growth and confidence in their sound

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I am focusing on developing my sound as a producer and engineer while continuing to build a strong catalogue of release ready music across electronic and urban genres I am also working on refining my mixing and production workflow through both academic study and real world practice as part of my Music Production and Music Business degree Alongside this I am involved in artist development projects where I help emerging artists shape their sound from early ideas into fully finished records ready for release My current focus is on Drum and Bass UK Rap and electronic music production while continuing to expand my range and collaborate with new artists whenever possible

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I use both analog and digital but I would never choose one over the other because they each bring something different to the process Digital gives me precision speed and complete control over every detail It allows me to work efficiently recall sessions instantly and push sound design and mixing in very complex and creative ways This is essential for modern music production where accuracy and workflow matter Analog on the other hand brings character depth and subtle imperfections that add life to a mix Hardware style compression saturation and summing can give music a sense of warmth and glue that is hard to fully replicate For me the best results come from a hybrid approach using digital tools for control and flexibility and analog style processing for tone and character This combination allows me to achieve a modern clean and powerful sound while still keeping it musical and emotionally engaging

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise to my clients is simple I will always treat every project with care attention to detail and full respect for your artistic vision I will do everything I can to enhance your music not change it into something it is not My focus is on bringing out the strongest most polished and impactful version of your track while keeping your identity intact You can expect clear communication honesty about what is achievable and a professional approach from start to finish I will always aim to deliver work that meets a commercial standard and translates well across all listening systems Most importantly I am committed to making sure you feel confident in the process and proud of the final result

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I enjoy most about my work is the process of taking an idea often something rough or unfinished and turning it into a fully realised, release-ready record. There’s something really rewarding about helping an artist hear their music in its best possible form for the first time, especially when the mix, energy, and detail all click into place. I also enjoy the balance between creativity and technical problem-solving. Every track presents different challenges, whether it’s shaping low-end, enhancing vocals, or building impact through arrangement and sound design, and that keeps the work constantly interesting. Most of all, I enjoy collaborating with artists and being part of their creative journey, helping them develop a sound they feel genuinely proud to share.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: The most common questions I get are around process, sound, and what’s actually possible with a track at different stages of production. One of the biggest questions is: “Can you make my track sound like a professional release?” My answer is yes but the result depends on the quality of the source material and how developed the idea is. A strong mix starts with a strong production, so I often look at arrangement, sound choice, and recording quality first before even touching processing. Another common question is: “What do you need from me to get started?” I usually ask for the project files or stems, along with reference tracks and a brief explanation of what the client wants to improve or achieve. The more context I have, the more precise and effective the result will be. People also ask: “How long will it take?” My answer depends on the complexity of the track, but I always aim to be clear and realistic with turnaround times while still prioritising quality over speed. Finally, many clients ask: “Will you change my song?” I always explain that my goal is to enhance the track, not overwrite it. Any creative suggestions are always collaborative, and the original vision is respected throughout the process.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that music production or mixing is just about “making things sound louder or cleaner.” In reality, it’s a creative and technical process that shapes the entire emotional impact of a track. Decisions around arrangement, sound selection, dynamics, space, and energy are just as important as EQ or compression. A great mix isn’t just polished—it helps tell the story of the song and keeps the listener engaged from start to finish. Another misconception is that results happen instantly. In practice, achieving a professional, release-ready sound comes from experience, detailed listening, and a structured workflow that balances precision with creativity. My role is not just to fix audio it’s to help elevate a track into its strongest possible version while respecting the artist’s original vision.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: When working with a new client, I like to ask a few key questions to make sure I fully understand the vision and can deliver the best possible result. First, I’ll ask about the reference tracks or artists that best represent the sound they’re aiming for. This helps establish a clear creative direction from the start. I also ask what stage the track is at, whether it’s just an idea, a rough demo, a fully arranged production, or already mixed—so I can understand what level of work is needed. Another important question is what the client feels is currently missing or not working in the track. This often reveals the most important areas to focus on, whether that’s low-end, vocals, arrangement, or overall energy. I’ll also ask about their release goals, deadlines, and where the track is intended to be used (e.g. streaming platforms, labels, DJ sets, or sync), as this can influence mixing and mastering decisions. Finally, I check how involved they want to be in the process and how they prefer to communicate, so the workflow feels smooth, collaborative, and efficient from start to finish.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: When hiring a music producer or mix engineer, the most important thing is clarity of vision and communication. The more detail you can provide upfront—such as reference tracks, stylistic direction, and what you feel is missing from your current track, the better the final result will be. It’s also worth choosing someone whose previous work genuinely aligns with the sound you’re aiming for. Listen closely to their mixes, arrangement style, and low-end clarity, especially if you’re working in genres like Drum & Bass, UK Rap, or electronic music where impact and balance are critical. Be open to collaboration as well. A good producer or engineer won’t just “process” your track—they’ll often suggest arrangement improvements, sound design ideas, or mix decisions that can elevate the song beyond the original concept. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions about process, revisions, and turnaround times. A professional will always be transparent, organised, and focused on helping you get the best possible result for your music.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I’d focus on flexibility, creativity, and the ability to fully produce and finish records from start to end. First, a powerful laptop running my DAW (Logic Pro), because that’s the centre of my entire production workflow. Alongside that, I’d take a reliable audio interface to ensure clean recording and monitoring. For monitoring, I’d choose a solid pair of studio headphones that I know intimately and can trust for mixing decisions in any environment. I’d also bring a versatile MIDI controller to stay hands-on with writing melodies, drums, and sound design without being limited by the environment. Finally, I’d take a multi-purpose synthesiser or sound module to give me endless sound design possibilities and keep the creative side flowing even in a stripped-back setup. With just those five tools, I could still write, produce, mix, and finish fully realised tracks anywhere.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I’ve been involved in music production for over 25 years, starting out in the underground music scene as both a producer and DJ. Early on, I was heavily active in the grime scene, which gave me a strong foundation in raw energy, rhythm, and sound system culture. From there, I transitioned into the Drum & Bass scene, where I further developed my production, mixing, and performance skills in a fast-moving, high-pressure environment. Alongside DJing and releasing music, I’ve continuously evolved as a producer, adapting to new tools, techniques, and genres while building a deep understanding of what makes records work both on the dancefloor and in a commercial context. More recently, I’ve formalised my practice through university study in Music Production and Music Business, alongside working in artist development. This has allowed me to combine real-world industry experience with academic understanding of audio, business, and modern production workflows. Today, I bring all of that together—underground roots, live DJ experience, and professional training—to help artists develop their sound and create high-quality, release-ready music.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is modern, clean, and impact-driven, with a strong focus on energy, clarity, and emotional connection. I specialise in electronic and urban-influenced music, where I blend tight, punchy low-end with wide, detailed top-end and dynamic arrangements that keep the listener engaged from start to finish. Whether it’s Drum & Bass, UK Rap, Grime, or electronic pop, my goal is always to make the track feel powerful, polished, and ready for release at a commercial level. I also lean heavily into a hybrid approach combining technical precision with creative sound design and musical instinct. This allows me to shape tracks that not only sound professional, but also have personality and identity.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I’d love to work with artists who are pushing modern electronic music forward while still maintaining a strong sense of identity and emotion in their sound. In particular, producers like Fred again.., Sub Focus, Skrillex, and Chase & Status stand out to me because of how they consistently balance technical production excellence with strong musicality and emotional impact. What interests me most is not just the scale of their work, but the attention to detail in their sound design, arrangement, and mixing. Working with artists like this, or emerging artists with a similar drive, would be an opportunity to contribute to music that feels innovative, powerful, and culturally relevant while continuing to grow as a producer and engineer.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One of the most important production tips is to focus on arrangement and energy before sound design perfection. A track can have amazing sounds, but if the arrangement doesn’t evolve or guide the listener properly, it won’t feel finished or engaging. I always recommend building your track in stages: start with a strong core loop, then think in terms of tension and release, what is introducing energy, what is removing it, and how the track progresses over time. A simple but effective approach is to constantly ask: “What is the listener hearing right now, and what has changed in the last 8–16 bars?” If you can make sure something is always evolving—whether it’s drums, bass movement, automation, or texture, you’ll instantly make your music feel more professional and release-ready.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: mainly work on modern electronic and urban-influenced music, with a strong focus on Drum & Bass, UK Rap, Grime, Bass Music, and Pop-influenced electronic production. I also regularly work on EDM across a range of styles, including house, future bass, and more experimental electronic sounds. My background in both production and engineering allows me to adapt across genres while still maintaining a clean, modern, and commercially competitive sound. That said, I’m always open to working outside of these styles if the project is creative and I feel I can add value to the record.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is modern music production and mixing, particularly in electronic genres such as Drum & Bass, UK Rap, Grime, and Pop-influenced electronic music. I have a strong ability to take a rough idea or demo and turn it into a polished, release-ready track by focusing on arrangement, energy, and sonic balance. I’m especially confident in creating impactful low-end (kick and bass relationship), clear and present vocals, and wide, dynamic mixes that translate well across all systems. Alongside the technical side, I also bring a strong creative instinct, knowing when to simplify, when to add energy, and how to shape a track so it feels engaging from start to finish.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: bring a combination of creativity, technical expertise, and a fresh perspective to every song. Whether I'm producing, mixing, mastering, or providing feedback, my focus is always on enhancing the emotional impact of the music while ensuring it sounds professional and competitive in today's market. With a background in music production, audio engineering, and sound design, I can help strengthen arrangements, improve sonic balance, create powerful transitions, refine vocals, and add the polish needed to make a track stand out. I pay close attention to detail while never losing sight of the bigger picture—the artist's vision and the message behind the music. I believe great production isn't about forcing a sound; it's about bringing out the best version of what is already there. My role is to help artists translate their ideas into records that connect with listeners, sound great on every system, and feel authentic to who they are. Above all, I bring professionalism, clear communication, and a genuine passion for helping artists create music they're proud to release.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Every project starts with understanding the artist's vision. I like to discuss references, influences, goals, and any specific requirements before work begins so we're both aligned on the desired outcome. Once I receive the files, I organise and prepare the session, ensuring everything is labelled, cleaned, and ready for an efficient workflow. Depending on the project, I then move through production, editing, sound design, mixing, or mastering using a structured process designed to achieve professional results while maintaining the artist's unique identity. Throughout the project, I provide clear communication and progress updates, and I welcome feedback to make sure the final product meets or exceeds expectations. My goal is not only to deliver a polished, industry-standard result but also to create a collaborative and enjoyable experience for every client. Typical workflow: Initial consultation and project brief File review and session preparation Production, editing, mixing, or mastering work Client review and feedback Revisions (where applicable) Final delivery in the required formats I pride myself on being reliable, organised, and easy to work with, ensuring projects are completed to a high standard and delivered on time.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Based in the UK, I work from a professional hybrid production and mixing environment built around industry-standard software and plugins. My studio is centred around Logic Pro, with additional experience in Pro Tools and Cubase, allowing me to work efficiently across a wide range of projects and workflows. My setup includes a comprehensive collection of professional tools from companies such as [Universal Audio](https://www.uaudio.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), [Waves Audio](https://www.waves.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), [FabFilter](https://www.fabfilter.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), [iZotope](https://www.izotope.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com) and [Native Instruments](https://www.native-instruments.com?utm_source=chatgpt.com), giving me access to world-class processing for mixing, mastering, sound design, restoration and creative production. My workflow is designed around modern commercial music production, with dedicated routing for drums, bass, instruments, vocals and effects, alongside analogue-style processing chains that help deliver punch, clarity and depth. Whether I'm producing a track from scratch, mixing a song, enhancing vocals, creating sound design, or preparing a release-ready master, my focus is always on achieving a professional, radio-ready result that translates across all listening systems. I specialise in EDM, Drum & Bass, UK Rap, Grime, Pop and electronic music, but I'm always excited to work with artists across different genres and help bring their vision to life.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm inspired by producers and engineers who combine technical excellence with creative innovation. Artists and producers such as Sub Focus, Culture Shock, Fred again.., Skrillex, Calvin Harris and Chase & Status have all influenced the way I approach production, sound design, arrangement, and mixing. From an engineering perspective, I admire professionals who can bring clarity, impact, and emotion to a record while maintaining a polished commercial sound. I'm constantly studying modern production techniques and refining my workflow to deliver records that compete with today's industry standards while still helping artists develop their own unique sound.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: The most common work I do for clients is taking existing ideas or rough productions and developing them into fully finished, release ready tracks. This often involves a combination of production, arrangement refinement, sound design, vocal enhancement, and full mix engineering. Many clients come to me with a strong idea or demo, and my role is to help elevate it by improving the structure, energy flow, low end impact, and overall sonic clarity. A big part of the work is also mixing, where I focus on balancing the elements of a track so everything sits clearly and powerfully while still feeling musical and emotionally engaging. In some cases I also provide mastering to ensure the final track translates properly across all systems. Across all of this, my main goal is to preserve the artist’s original idea while enhancing it to a professional standard that is ready for streaming platforms, DJ sets, or label release.
