Interview with Rob-G
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is my independent work released through [BOY Records] because it represents my growth as both an artist and songwriter. My role included writing, recording and helping shape the overall creative direction of the music.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now I’m focused on building my catalog, collaborating with artists and preparing upcoming releases under [BOY Records]
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m currently focused on building my own network and collaborations while continuing to connect with talented artists and creatives through SoundBetter.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because it allows flexibility, faster workflow and the ability to collaborate with artists from anywhere while still creating professional sounding records.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is professionalism, clear communication, authentic lyricism and delivering quality work that matches the energy and vision of the record.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most is creating authentic music, collaborating with other artists and turning real experiences into records people can connect with.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most clients ask about turnaround time and vocal style. I typically deliver within a few days and always aim to match the energy and direction of the record while still bringing my own creativity.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A lot of people think lyricism alone makes a great record, but delivery, emotion and song structure are just as important.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask about the song’s direction, beat style, preferred delivery, references and turnaround expectations so I can deliver the best possible result.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for authenticity, communication and consistency. The best collaborations happen when both artists understand the vision for the record.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A microphone, audio interface, laptop, headphones & a iPhone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been developing as an independent artist for several years while building my own brand and catalog through consistent writing, recording and collaborations.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is gritty, lyrical and authentic with strong punchlines, storytelling and classic New York hip-hop influence.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d like to work with Benny the Butcher because we come from similar environments and I respect the way he built an independent brand while staying authentic to his sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus more on emotion and delivery instead of trying to overcrowd every song with bars. Performance and energy can make a great verse even more impactful.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I primarily work on boom bap, East Coast hip-hop, gritty underground rap and lyrical hip-hop records.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is lyricism and creating memorable verses with strong flow, punchlines and authenticity.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring authenticity, storytelling, punchlines and gritty East Coast energy while still making records feel modern and replayable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding the artist’s vision, beat selection and overall direction for the song. From there I write, record and deliver professional WAV files with clear communication throughout the process.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record using a Focusrite Scarlett interface with a home studio setup focused on capturing clean vocals, strong performances and professional quality audio files.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists like Benny the Butcher, Jadakiss, Ransom, Jay-Z and classic East Coast hip-hop producers who focus on authenticity, lyricism and timeless records.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mainly provide feature verses, hooks and songwriting for underground hip-hop and boom bap artists looking for authentic lyricism and strong delivery.
