Interview with J.Lauryn

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I'm especially proud of is "Goodbyes" by Post Malone and Young Thug. I was a co-writer on the song, and it became a global hit that debuted at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped propel Hollywood's Bleeding to become the highest-selling album of 2019. What makes me most proud isn't the commercial success, but knowing that a song I helped create connected with millions of people around the world. Moments like that remind me why I fell in love with songwriting in the first place.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently balancing several creative projects, including songwriting and production for artists across multiple genres, developing children's music and educational content through Vibey Kids, and continuing to release my own music as an independent artist. I love having the opportunity to work on projects that challenge me creatively while helping artists bring their ideas to life.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: One of the things I appreciate about SoundBetter is the incredible talent available across so many specialties. Rather than recommending one specific person, I encourage clients to explore profiles, listen carefully to examples of work, and find collaborators whose style and personality align with their vision. The right fit is often just as important as the credits.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital. While I appreciate the character and warmth of analog gear, digital tools have allowed creators to collaborate globally and work more efficiently than ever before. Most importantly, great songs come from great ideas, not the equipment used to capture them. I focus on whatever tools help bring the music to life in the best way possible.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is to treat every project with the same level of care, creativity, and professionalism regardless of budget, genre, or experience level. I will always do my best to understand your vision, communicate clearly, and deliver work that I'm proud to put my name on. My goal is not just to complete a project, but to help create something exceptional.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Honestly, my favorite part is the human connection. I love sitting down with someone, hearing their story, their experiences, and what they want to say, then helping turn that into a song. It's kind of crazy when you think about it—we're literally taking thoughts, emotions, and sounds that only exist in our heads and turning them into something real. Music has always felt like one of the most powerful and beautiful things on the planet to me, so being able to create it with other people never gets old.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: The most common question I get is, "Can you help bring my idea to life even if it's not fully developed?" The answer is absolutely. Some of the best songs start with a simple voice memo, lyric idea, or rough concept. My job is to help transform that spark into a polished, professional song while staying true to the artist's vision.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One misconception people sometimes have is that because I've worked with major artists and global projects, I'm not accessible or available to independent artists. The truth is, I joined SoundBetter because I genuinely love creating music and helping bring great ideas to life. Whether it's a major label project or someone's first song, I enjoy the creative process, collaborating with passionate artists, and helping turn inspiration into something people can connect with.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask: What is your vision for this project? Who are your musical influences? What emotion/story are you trying to create? Who is the target audience? Are there any reference songs you love? Understanding those details helps me create something that feels authentic to the artist while maximizing the song's potential.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone whose work makes you feel something. Credits and accomplishments matter, but communication, professionalism, creativity, and understanding your vision are just as important. The best collaborations happen when both sides trust each other and are working toward the same goal.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: A laptop with Logic Pro, my U87 Microphone, Audio-Technica Headphones, UA Apollo Interface, and a solar-powered hard drive full of sounds and sessions. If I'm stranded, I'm still making records.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I moved from Kailua, Hawaii to Los Angeles in 2007 to pursue a career in dance and was fortunate to work professionally alongside some incredible artists throughout the years. While I loved performing, I eventually realized my true passion was creating the music itself. I became increasingly drawn to songwriting, production, and the creative process behind the scenes, which led me to shift my focus from being on stage to being in the studio. Writing has always been a passion of mine, but my professional songwriting career really began to take shape when I landed my first major placement with Ziggy Marley. That project went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album and opened the door to opportunities with artists such as Post Malone, BTS, ROSÉ, DJ Snake, and many others. Since then, I've spent nearly a decade building my career as a songwriter, producer, and artist, helping bring songs to life for artists around the world.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I don't like to stay in one lane. My sound is rooted in strong melodies, authentic emotion, and creative versatility. Having worked across multiple genres and global markets, I enjoy finding the unique intersection between an artist's identity and what resonates with listeners. Whether it's an intimate ballad, a radio-ready pop record, a K-Pop anthem, or a reggae groove, I'm passionate about creating music that feels genuine, memorable, and impactful.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I love working with artists who aren't afraid to push creative boundaries and explore new sounds. Someone like Billie Eilish, SZA, Burna Boy, or Tems would be exciting because they consistently blend authenticity, innovation, and storytelling while creating music that connects globally.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always prioritize the song over the production. A great melody and lyric can survive a simple demo, but no amount of production can save a weak song. Focus on creating a memorable emotional moment first, then build the production around it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I regularly work across Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, K-Pop, Reggae, Dance, Alternative Pop, and Sync music. My catalog includes collaborations with artists such as Post Malone, BTS, ROSÉ, DJ Snake, Ziggy Marley, Jackson Wang, and (G)I-DLE, allowing me to adapt to a wide range of genres while maintaining a strong melodic identity.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is melody. I specialize in crafting memorable hooks, toplines, and vocal arrangements that connect emotionally while remaining commercially competitive. I also have extensive experience translating an artist's story and vision into lyrics that feel authentic and impactful.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a unique combination of songwriting, production, vocal arrangement, and artist development experience. Having written and produced records for global artists across Pop, Hip-Hop, K-Pop, Reggae, and R&B, I focus on creating songs with strong emotional connection, memorable melodies, commercial appeal, and lasting impact. Whether it's a topline, lyric, vocal production, or full song concept, my goal is always to create something timeless.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every project starts with understanding the artist's vision, goals, and target audience. From there, I develop melodies, lyrics, concepts, and vocal arrangements that best serve the record. Throughout the process, I maintain clear communication and provide updates to ensure we're aligned creatively. Once the song is complete, I deliver organized, professional files and am always happy to make reasonable revisions to ensure the client is thrilled with the final result.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work from a professional home studio equipped for songwriting, vocal recording, production, editing, and remote collaboration. My setup includes Logic Pro, professional-grade microphones, industry-standard plugins, and high-quality monitoring systems. I regularly collaborate with artists, labels, publishers, and producers around the world, allowing me to efficiently deliver broadcast-ready vocals, demos, songwriting, and production files remotely.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm inspired by music professionals such as Nova Wav, Ryan Tedder, Timbaland, Pharrell, Max Martin, Ariana Grande, & more

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I'm a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, producer, vocalist, and topliner specializing in creating commercially competitive songs across Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, K-Pop, Reggae, and Dance. Most clients hire me for songwriting, vocal production, topline creation, demo vocals, and full song development. Whether starting from scratch or elevating an existing track, my goal is always to deliver memorable melodies, impactful lyrics, and records that connect with audiences worldwide. I am also available for mentorship & song review for honest feedback/advice.
