Mixing and Mastering

Tomas Cech on SoundBetter

Mastering engineer specialising in dynamic electronic music for streaming and vinyl, delivering clarity, punch and musicality without sacrificing the soul of the mix.

I’ve been involved in music for over 20 years and have been working professionally in mixing and mastering for the past 8 years. In 2025, I completed the Mastering program at Berklee Online, further developing my expertise in both streaming and vinyl mastering.

I work from my private studio in The Hague, Netherlands, where I use a hybrid analogue and digital workflow to achieve clear, dynamic and musical results. My focus is primarily on electronic music, including techno, house, breakbeat, UK garage and related genres.

Whether your music is destined for streaming platforms or vinyl release, my goal is to preserve the energy, depth and emotion of your mix while ensuring a professional and competitive final master.

Interview with Tomas Cech

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: My advice is to choose someone who values communication and understands your artistic vision. The best results come from a good working relationship where ideas can be discussed openly. As an engineer, my priority is always the client’s goals and requirements, and I believe clear communication is the key to a successful project.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: A laptop with my DAW, a good pair of headphones, an EQ, a compressor, and a solar panel to keep everything powered. With those five things, I’d probably end up mixing and mastering music even on a desert island.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I’ve been involved in music production for over 19 years, and for the past 6 years it has been my full-time profession. Over that time, I’ve worked with a wide range of artists and genres, continuously developing my skills through hands-on experience, professional training, and a passion for great sound.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I would describe my style as open-minded, detail-oriented, and focused on continuous improvement. I enjoy working with different genres and artists because every project teaches me something new. My goal is always to understand the artist’s vision and enhance it with clarity, balance, and dynamics rather than imposing my own sound.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Sade

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: My biggest production tip is to create something every day. When inspiration strikes, capture the idea quickly. I usually know within the first 15 minutes whether an idea has potential. Consistent practice and finishing projects are often more important than waiting for perfect inspiration.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I primarily work with electronic music and have experience across a wide range of electronic genres, from techno and house to breakbeat, electro, and ambient music. I also work on reggae projects and occasionally mix or master jazz, swing, and classical music. While electronic music is my main focus, I enjoy working with any genre that values great sound, clarity, and dynamics.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My greatest strengths are my experience, continuous learning, and passion for audio production. Studying mastering at Berklee Online helped me develop a deeper understanding of the craft and broaden my perspective on mixing and mastering. I am always looking to improve my skills and refine my approach, bringing both technical knowledge and careful attention to every project I work on.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: My goal is not to impose my own sound on a project, but to help artists achieve the best version of their vision. I focus on clarity, depth, balance, and dynamics while preserving the character of the music. When a mix already sounds great, I prefer subtle improvements rather than unnecessary processing, ensuring the final result translates well across streaming platforms, clubs, and vinyl.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: My process always starts with careful listening. When working on an EP or album, I listen to all tracks several times to understand the overall sound, energy, and relationship between them. I take detailed notes on each track, identifying strengths, potential issues, and areas that may need improvement. Once I begin working, I treat every track individually while constantly comparing it to the others to maintain consistency in tone, balance, dynamics, and overall impact. After completing the mixing or mastering process, I take additional time to listen to the project again from start to finish on different monitoring systems. This final review helps ensure that everything works together as a cohesive release and translates well across a variety of listening environments.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My studio is built around a hybrid analog/digital workflow. I use analog mixers, hardware compressors, and professional digital tools for mixing and mastering. Monitoring is handled primarily through Adam S3V speakers, supported by vintage Czech Tesla studio monitors for additional reference checks. This setup allows me to balance technical accuracy with musical character and ensure consistent results across streaming, club, and vinyl formats.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Some of my biggest inspirations are Tensal, Exium, Klint, and ANFS. I admire their ability to combine powerful sound design with clarity, dynamics, and attention to detail. Their productions have influenced the way I approach mixing and mastering, especially when working with electronic music. I am particularly inspired by how they create depth, energy, and atmosphere while maintaining a clean and professional sound.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Most of my work involves mixing and mastering tracks for streaming platforms and vinyl releases. My goal is to help artists achieve a professional, dynamic, and well-balanced sound that translates across all listening environments while maintaining the unique character of their music.
