AJ Noe on SoundBetter

I’m a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and audio engineer with more than 25 years of experience spanning performance, composition, recording, and music production.

My background includes formal studies in music composition, advanced training in music theory and ear training, and experience performing in ensembles ranging from jazz bands and orchestras to contemporary music projects.

As a guitarist, bassist, pianist, drummer, vocalist, and arranger, I bring a deep understanding of music from both the creative and technical sides. I can read and write music notation, work within the Nashville Number System, and communicate effectively with musicians across a wide range of genres and disciplines.

Whether developing original compositions, producing records, creating sound design, or helping artists refine their work, I focus on delivering polished, professional results. My ability to combine musicianship, composition, production, and engineering allows me to guide projects from initial concept to final master while maintaining a strong commitment to quality, creativity, and attention to detail.

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Either. Because at the end of the day how it's made isn't as important as whether or not people like it.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To do my best to understand what they need from me before I do anything else.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That professional results require expensive equipment.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What are you trying to convey? What are some similar artists that you are inspired by? What are some songs that you like the sound of?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Be very specific in what you're looking for.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Less is more!

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Rock, Hard Rock, Metal

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is writing and idea generation. Whether I'm working on a song, composition, arrangement, production, or lyric, I have a natural ability to generate a large volume of ideas and creative possibilities. Over the years, I've learned that great work rarely comes from waiting for a perfect idea. It comes from creating enough ideas that you can identify the strongest ones and develop them into something meaningful. What I've become particularly skilled at is the refinement process. I can take a rough concept, melody, lyric, arrangement, or creative direction and shape it into something more focused, intentional, and impactful. My experience allows me to recognize what serves the song, what distracts from it, and what has the potential to create a lasting emotional connection with listeners. In many ways, my greatest strength isn't simply creating ideas. It's knowing how to turn the right ideas into finished work that feels authentic and purposeful.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring a combination of musicianship, technical expertise, and life experience to every song I work on. With more than 25 years of experience as a composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and audio engineer, I'm able to evaluate a song from multiple perspectives at once. I can identify opportunities in the writing, arrangement, performance, production, and overall emotional impact while keeping the artist's vision at the center of the process. Beyond the technical side, I believe great music comes from genuine human experience. Having spent decades navigating both personal and professional challenges, successes, relationships, setbacks, and growth, I bring a level of emotional perspective that can be difficult to teach. That experience helps me recognize what feels authentic, what resonates with listeners, and what gives a song lasting emotional weight. My goal is not simply to make a song sound better, but to help it connect more deeply with the people who hear it.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: My process always starts with listening. Before making changes, adding layers, or offering suggestions, I take the time to understand the vision, goals, and emotional intent behind the project. Whether it's a song, composition, production, or mix, I believe every creative decision should support what the artist or client is trying to communicate. Understanding the "why" behind a piece is often just as important as understanding the music itself. From there, I focus on identifying opportunities to enhance rather than distract. Every adjustment, arrangement choice, production element, or mix decision should strengthen the song and serve the final outcome. Sometimes that means adding depth, energy, or polish. Other times it means simplifying, removing unnecessary elements, or preserving what already works. My goal is never to impose my own vision on a project, but to elevate the existing vision and help it reach its fullest potential while maintaining its authenticity.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Some of my biggest influences come from producers and engineers who helped define the sound of modern hard rock and metal. I have tremendous respect for Mutt Lange, Bob Rock, Andy Wallace, Chris Lord-Alge, Michael Wagener, Kevin Churko, and Michael Baskette. Each brought a unique approach to production, from meticulous arrangement and vocal production to powerful mixes and larger-than-life sonic landscapes. Their work demonstrates that great records are built on far more than great performances alone. Songwriting, arrangement, engineering, and attention to detail all play equally important roles in creating music that stands the test of time. As a musician, songwriter, and composer, I also draw inspiration from artists such as Queen, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Foo Fighters, and Dream Theater. These artists consistently balanced technical ability with memorable songwriting, strong melodies, and emotional impact. What inspires me most is their commitment to craftsmanship and their ability to create music that remains meaningful long after its release. That same philosophy guides my own work, whether I'm producing a record, composing original music, helping an artist develop a song, or refining a mix.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Some additive audio production, a bit of editing, and mainly mixing and mastering.
