Dylan Hazen on SoundBetter

I’m a New York based producer, songwriter, and electronic artist focused on creating records that feel forward-thinking, emotional, and sonically distinctive. My work blends modern dance music, pop, club culture, and a strong emphasis on artist identity and world-building.

What I Do

* Full Commercial and Dance Song Production
* Remixing & Re-Production
* Vocal Production & Editing
* Mixing Engineer
* Live Show Design
* In-Person or Remote Sessions

A big part of my approach is flexibility. I adapt to the artist’s workflow rather than forcing a rigid system. Some artists want to be deeply involved in every detail, others want me to take the lead and present ideas for them to react to. I’m comfortable anywhere in that spectrum, driving the session, collaborating side by side, or stepping into a supporting role where I help bring clarity and direction. Once you reach out, you can send over your ideas, demos, references, or even just a rough direction of what you’re trying to create. From there, we’ll dive into your vision in detail, what inspires you, what you’re aiming for, and how you want the record to feel sonically and emotionally. Most records are turned around within just a few days depending on the scope, with constant communication throughout the process so you’re always in the loop. I keep feedback flexible and collaborative. You can give notes through written feedback, live stream sessions, or in-person studio.

Interview with Dylan Hazen

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of the things I’m most proud of is less about a project and more about the mindset I bring to every record I work on. For me, the work is never really “finished” in a fixed sense, it’s an ongoing pursuit of better ideas. Every record teaches me something new, and I try to carry that forward into whatever comes next. I’ve learned to not get too attached to any one outcome, because what excites me most is the process of building, experimenting, and pushing a track until it feels like it has its own identity. That mindset keeps me constantly evolving and prevents me from repeating myself creatively. Even when a record turns out great, I’m immediately thinking about how the next one can feel more impactful, more emotional, or more sonically unique. My favorite record is always the next one!!! That’s really how I stay inspired and keep pushing forward. It reflects how I approach collaboration too, every artist and every session is an opportunity to start fresh, take risks, and create something that feels alive in the moment. I take a lot of pride in the consistency of showing up fully invested in the process, staying curious, and never settling creatively. For me, that mindset is the real work and it’s what keeps every project exciting.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: I'm obsessed with the process of creating music. I’m fascinated by the entire idea of making something from nothing. I genuinely love being in the studio for hours experimenting and pushing ideas further than where they started. A lot of people only think about the final song, but for me the process itself is what I’m most passionate about. I love the trial and error, the problem solving, the spontaneity and those moments where something completely unexpected happens creatively and changes the direction of the record for the better. More than anything, I love that music production constantly feels limitless. There’s always something new to learn, new ways to approach sound, and new ideas to explore creatively. That endless possibility is a huge part of what keeps me inspired every single day.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Technical skill is important, but chemistry and trust are just as important when you’re making music together. The best collaborations usually happen when both people are excited about the same direction and are open to building something together. I also think it’s important to look for someone whose work already emotionally connects with you. Don’t just listen for whether something sounds “professional”.. Pay attention to whether their productions feel inspiring, unique, and aligned with the kind of artist you want to become. A producer can have great credits, but if they don’t understand your identity or your goals, the process can feel disconnected. At the end of the day, you want to work with someone who makes you feel creatively supported and genuinely cares about helping you make the best possible music.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Metaphorically I always say "we are in the car together". Sometimes I drive or sit in the passenger seat. Maybe even the trunk sometimes lol.. whatever helps the process and the music come together in the best way possible. What matters most to me is creating an environment where artists feel comfortable experimenting, communicating openly, and pushing ideas further than they originally imagined. I want people to feel like we’re building something together, not just completing a transaction.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: My work process is very collaborative and centered around understanding the artist’s vision first. Every project is different, so I like to start by talking through references, influences, and the overall feeling the artist wants to create. Sometimes that starts with a vocal idea, rough demo, lyrics, or even just a conversation about the atmosphere and emotion we want the song to have. As the track develops, I focus heavily on sonic detail, sound design and dynamics. Throughout the process I keep communication very open and collaborative, sending updates, revisions, and refining details together until the record feels fully realized. Once the production is finalized, I move into edit town, mixing, and making sure everything feels translatable across different sound systems ensuring the track is release ready.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: In the studio, I primarily work in Ableton Live, but also use Pro Tools, Logic Pro x, Reason 11 and Audacity. I recently graduated from Berklee College of Music as a EDI (Electronic Digital Instrument) principal with a degree in Music Production & Engineering and a concentration in Commercial Record Production. Alongside my independent work as a producer and artist, I’m also an assistant engineer and producer at Cove City Sound Studios, where I work hands on with outboard gear and recording consoles including the Neve 8068 and SSL 4000+ consoles. This experience has really shaped my approach to mixing by combining the precision of modern digital production and understanding the character of classic analog techniques. My setup and workflow are built around creating records that feel modern, immersive, and sonically detailed while still maintaining emotion and musicality at the center of the process.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: My biggest inspiration has always been Avicii. What inspired me most about him was his ability to combine emotional songwriting with electronic production in a way that felt timeless and universally connecting. His music had huge energy and impact while still feeling deeply human, which is something I’m constantly striving for in my own work. I’m also really inspired by producers and artists who push sonic boundaries and create immersive worlds through their music like Ryan Tedder, Skrillex, Zedd, and Andrew Watt. A lot of my inspiration comes from artists and producers who are able to bridge the gap between technical production, strong songwriting, and emotional impact. That intersection is where I feel the most creatively inspired.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Every artist has a different workflow and way of working, a lot of the time artists come to me with a vocal idea, rough demo, reference tracks, or even just a vision for how they want something to feel. I especially love starting everything completely from scratch together in the room. That collaborative process is where I feel the most inspired creatively. Most of my work lives in electronic, dance, hip-hop, RnB and pop music, but really anything that is commercially driven.
