Interview with Simon Rich

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I am especially proud of a recent creative rearrangement and mash-up of Bruce Springsteen’s 'I’m on Fire'. I reinvented the track by blending its classic acoustic roots with an epic, atmospheric pop-rock sound heavily inspired by U2, incorporating intricate guitar delay loops and multi-layered vocal harmonies. My role was complete: I acted as the lead vocalist, arranger, and mixing engineer. I'm proud of it because it perfectly demonstrates how a timeless song can be transformed into a modern sonic experience through creative production.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I am fully focused on my live performance season, while simultaneously tracking and mixing vocal arrangements for a series of international pop-funk and atmospheric indie-rock covers in my studio. I am also writing and producing my own upcoming original material in Italian, blending cinematic structures with modern pop grooves.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I am currently focused on delivering top-tier vocal and engineering services through my own studio setup. However, SoundBetter is packed with incredible global talent, and I am always open to networking and collaborating with high-end producers, session musicians, and mastering engineers to bring my clients' projects to the absolute highest standard.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I believe in a hybrid approach. I love analog for the front-end tracking—nothing beats the warmth, character, and natural saturation of a high-end microphone running through a premium preamp like my Universal Audio Apollo unison preamps. However, for vocal production, editing, and mixing, digital is king. The recall capabilities, the precision of surgical EQ, and advanced tools like Melodyne or pitch-alignment software allow me to deliver flawless, radio-ready stems with total flexibility.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to treat every song as if it were my own. I promise absolute vocal dedication, crystalline audio quality, and immaculate, radio-ready editing. No shortcuts, no rushed takes, and zero digital artifacts. You will receive professional, perfectly tuned, and time-aligned WAV stems delivered on time, with transparent communication from the first note to the final master.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most is the magic of transformation and collaboration. I love the moment a client sends me a raw instrumental track and I get to build a full, emotional vocal architecture around it—layering leads, building complex backing harmonies, and using my audio engineering skills to make the song truly come alive. Seeing a track evolve from a simple demo into a powerful, radio-ready product that connects with people is the most rewarding feeling in the world.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I always deliver both options: a rough mix preview so you can hear how the vocals sit with the instruments, and the 100% 'dry' (raw) high-resolution WAV stems (24-bit) with all processing, tuning, and time-alignment baked in, completely ready for your own mix. Regarding revisions, my priority is your total satisfaction, so I include up to 2 rounds of free minor revisions (adjusting tone, delivery, or a specific line) as long as it aligns with the original brief.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that session singing is just about showing up and singing into a microphone for an hour. People don't realize the massive amount of meticulous audio engineering work that happens after the performance. To deliver radio-ready stems, I spend hours on vocal comping, precise time-alignment, and manual pitch editing with high-end tools to make sure the harmonies and lead locks perfectly. It’s an intensive craft that combines raw artistic emotion with heavy digital audio expertise.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: 1. What is the exact BPM, time signature, and sample rate of the project?2. Can you provide a reference track or artist style you want me to emulate for the lead vocals?3. Do you need a straight lead vocal, or should I also arrange and record background harmonies and ad-libs?4. What is the target market or platform for this track (Streaming, Film/TV Sync, Club)?5. Are there any specific lyrics or vocal melodies already written, or do you want me to improvise and create them?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My best advice is to provide a clear brief, a solid reference track, and a well-arranged instrumental guide. Communication is key: tell me the exact emotion, vocal style, and energy you want for your song. Also, since I deliver fully edited, tuned, and time-aligned stems, sharing your project's precise BPM and sample rate from day one ensures a seamless, fast, and radio-ready workflow.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: 1. An acoustically perfect solar-powered cabin (with zero island-wind resonance).2. My trusted Universal Audio Apollo interface (with all my favorite DSP plugins pre-loaded).3. A high-end Neumann microphone to capture the emotional depth of the island vibes.4. A MacBook Pro running Pro Tools/Logic with a lifetime battery.5. My favorite Fender Strat or acoustic guitar with a built-in delay loop pedal so I can create stadium-rock echoes for the seagulls.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been working as a professional lead vocalist, session singer, and audio engineer for over 20 years. My career path started with years of intense live performances on stage, where I developed my vocal power, tone control, and stage presence. Over the years, I naturally transitioned into the studio world, building my own setup and mastering the arts of vocal production, digital editing, and high-end mixing. Today, I combine my extensive live experience with advanced studio engineering to deliver top-tier, industry-standard musical products.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a powerful blend of classic stadium-rock energy and sophisticated modern pop-funk groove. I combine the raw, emotional grit of iconic performers like Bono with the flawless vocal agility, range, and harmonic richness of modern R&B. Production-wise, my style is radio-ready, polished, and meticulously edited, ensuring maximum impact in any mix.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Mark Ronson. His ability to blend vintage analog warmth with modern, hard-hitting pop and R&B grooves is unparalleled. As a vocalist and mixing engineer, I deeply respect his attention to detail in vocal arrangements and sonic textures. Collaborating with him would be the ultimate playground to push my vocal range and production skills to their absolute limits.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: To create massive, wide backing vocals that don't muddy up the center lead, try using the 'Complementary EQ' technique. Instead of just panning your harmony stacks hard left and right, apply a narrow notch cut (around 1-2 dB) on the backing vocals at the exact frequency where the lead vocal has its unique 'bite' and presence (usually between 2 kHz and 5 kHz). Then, boost that exact same frequency on the backing vocals by 1 dB on the sides. This creates a sonic pocket, keeping the lead focused and upfront while making the harmonies wrap beautifully around the listener's head.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on International Pop, Funk/R&B, Epic Rock, Cinematic tracks, and Jazz-Pop ballads. I am always open to cross-genre collaborations that require premium vocal production.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is the combination of an international-level vocal range with high-end digital audio engineering. I don't just deliver a powerful and versatile vocal performance inspired by iconic artists; I perform advanced editing, seamless vocal tuning, and pristine time-alignment, providing producers with radio-ready stems that fit perfectly into any mix.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring emotional depth, dynamic control, and professional structure to every track. I don't just sing the notes; I interpret the story of the song. Whether it requires a gritty rock belt à la Bono, a smooth R&B vibe like Bruno Mars, or meticulously crafted backing vocal harmonies, I tailor my performance to elevate the track's energy and make it radio-ready.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First, I study the client's track and brief to understand the vision. Then, I record multiple solid takes, perform meticulous vocal editing (comping, tuning, time-alignment), and deliver a rough mix preview. Once the client approves, I provide the clean, high-resolution WAV stems.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in an acoustically treated studio environment equipped with professional gear. I use a high-end Universal Audio Apollo interface for pristine conversion and a selected microphone locker to suit different vocal characters, running on top-tier DAWs with industry-standard processing plugins.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I am deeply inspired by legendary vocalists and visionaries like Bono (U2) and Bruce Springsteen for their raw emotion and stage presence, as well as modern masters like Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak for their flawless groove and vocal arrangements. Production-wise, I look up to Quincy Jones and Max Martin for their timeless sonic perfection and ability to elevate a song's structure.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I connect with listeners who appreciate powerful vocals, rich harmonic arrangements, and high-quality production. My music appeals to fans of classic epic rock, timeless jazz melodies, and modern energetic pop-funk.
