Interview with Collyn O'Brien
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The RYSE Above All EP. I am very proud to be a part of something that I truly believe will take off and I love EDM music. The sound design possibilities are endless. Acting as mixing and mastering engineer allows me to sculpt each song into it's own beautiful creation.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: An up coming debut EP for RYSE Above All.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Sometimes you need a combination. Certain genres call for only digital like EDM and others call for a certain warmth that only Analog can provide. With all the crossover these days its hard to say which I prefer since I have songs that I love from both settings.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver the highest quality sound possible with the files I have been given.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Getting to make music and play with sounds all day, what's not to love?!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I don't just push faders and make things louder, I clear space and create and entire soundscape with every piece of work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What song or songs are you most trying to catch the feeling of?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: If you like the way my works sounds then allow me the opportunity to give your music/work the same quality sonically. Pricing aside, I will put forth 100% effort with every project I touch.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Macbook pro equipped with Logic Pro, Neumann KH 120 monitors, Neumann u87 and a midi keyboard. Not much you can't do with that set up.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have always had a passion for sound, starting by writing lyrics and creating my own rap songs and have since moved behind the scenes to take on the engineering role which I love!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I can mix any genre. When I produce it is more on the LOFI hip hop side.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Machine Gun Kelly. I really love the instrumentation quality and the realness in his lyrics and I feel like the vibe in the studio with him would be amazing.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never mix your own work, get another ear to the project to bring out its full potential.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip hop/R&B and EDM; future bass to dubstep.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Clean sound, professional mix, trained ear.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a professional ear to any song. I can hear what frequencies need to be taken out and which ones need to be pushed to make that sound stand out in the mix. Working with the artists I do, I have gained a strong understanding of structure and proper sonic dynamic range as well.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Find the star of the mix whether its the vocal or more the kick and bass with EDM. Then build the mix out from there. I like to have space in my mix no matter what genre, every sound has its place.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a few different rooms I work out of, but the main place is my home set up which I am running a Focusrite Scarlett interface and Mackie CR4 monitors. I mix in Pro Tools and master in Ozone. Another room I record out of is running and Apollo 8 interface with Avalon Tube pre amp, AKG 414 mic and JL Audio 12" monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: There's not one or a few in particular, rather anyone who speaks from the heart and has great dynamics and a clean sound to their instrumentation inspires me.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and mastering.
