Interview with gregson
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try me. You gotta see it to believe it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, headphones, external hard drive, and iLok. Don't even need the 5th one.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have always taken music classes since I was 4 years old. I learned how to play the piano, clarinet, trumpet, xylophone, drums, and bass. I could never get away from music, and in 2013 I discovered FL Studio, teaching myself how to use it with the help of YouTube tutorials. After spending a few years mastering the program, I decided to further my education by attending Berklee College of Music for four years. Following my studies, I moved to Miami, where I have had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the biggest names in the music industry.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have a reputation for being immensely detail-oriented and extremely versatile with my work. I tend to make choices based on the feeling a song is conveying, rather than following pre-written formulas, whether that is song structure, choice of chords, etc.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Recently, I have focused on producing Latin music and R&B, but I have also worked with various other genres, including House, Disco, Hip Hop, Trap, Classical Music, and Funk. Whenever I am presented with a new genre, I conduct in-depth research to understand its roots and evolution. This helps me work with the new sound while bringing my own modern production style to the table.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I consider myself skilled at creating genre fusions and modernizing traditional genres.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Given my lengthy background in many genres, I bring authenticity to the table. Regardless of the genre I work on with my clients, I always approach the song with a 'pop' mentality, aiming to help it reach its highest potential while staying true to its authenticity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I begin by having a conversation with my client to understand the goal of the song we are about to create. Then, I select the instruments we will work with, whether they are organic instruments or digital plugins. This step is crucial to the process. Next, I create a 'demo' beat that is basic enough to allow for quick changes, yet enough to understand the concept and write lyrics over it. Once we finalize the lyrics, I can complete the production.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Studio Monitors: Mackie MR mk3 Series MR6mk3 6-Inch, a pair of NS-10's Audio Interface: Apollo Twin X Thunderbolt Computer: MacBook Pro (14-inch, 2021) Gear: Moog Subsequent 25, KORG Prologue 8, MXL Genesis condenser microphone, custom-made ribbon microphone, Neve preamp, CL1B compressor, and multiple guitars and basses.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I admire music producers such as Max Martin, Metro Boomin, MAG, and Tainy.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I love analog keyboards and sounds, and I actually use an analog synthesizer for many of my projects, but I cannot live without digital plugins.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise you a great catchy production that will most-likely make you want to work with me again.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who have you worked with before?
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Chance the Rapper is one of the artists I'd give everything to work with since he is a humble guy from Chicago who has achieved many goals being an independent artist, and obviously because I love his music and style.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do custom productions, vocal editing, mixing, and recording at studios.
