Interview with JaysonChang
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced and mixed a track for a local rapper that went viral on Chinese streaming platforms. I crafted a beat that sampled an old Chinese folk song and fused it with modern trap, and handled all the arrangement and mixing. Seeing it resonate with so many listeners was a huge highlight.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on a bilingual hip hop EP for a Chinese-American rapper, blending 808-heavy trap with traditional Asian instrumentation.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don’t have a specific recommendation at the moment, but I’m always open to collaborating with great vocalists and engineers on the platform.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, because it offers unparalleled flexibility, recall, and accessibility. That said, I love the warmth of analog saturation and often use analog-modeled plugins to get the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to treat every project with the same passion as if it were my own release, and to never stop revising until you are 100% satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the moment when a client hears the final track and it exceeds their expectations. Turning a rough idea into a song that moves people is incredibly rewarding.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Usually within 48 hours for a custom beat, depending on complexity. I can also provide a rough draft in 24 hours if needed.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that beat making is just pressing a few buttons. Great production involves sound design, arrangement, mixing, and understanding an artist’s emotion — it’s a craft that takes years to master.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about their artistic vision, reference tracks, vocal range and language, desired mood, deadline, and if they need mixing/mastering in addition to the beat.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come with reference tracks and a clear idea of the vibe you want, but also be open to creative input. Good communication will always lead to a better result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: “Laptop with Ableton Live, a compact audio interface (like Apollo Solo), a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones, a small MIDI keyboard, and a portable recorder like a Zoom H6 to capture sounds.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started making beats 6 years ago, experimenting with FL Studio in my bedroom. I began producing for local Chinese rappers, and over time, expanded to mixing and full song production. Now I work with artists internationally, delivering professional tracks.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is modern, hard-hitting, and atmospheric — blending Western trap with Eastern melodies and textures. I like to create cinematic moments in hip hop.”
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Higher Brothers — their ability to switch between Chinese and English flow effortlessly inspires me, and I’d love to produce a track that fuses trap with Sichuan dialect energy.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Layer your snares and claps to create a wider stereo image, but always check phase correlation. Also, use reference tracks to keep your mix competitive.” 或更具体的:“A simple tip: high-pass filter everything except kick and bass to clean up the low end. It makes a huge difference in clarity.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Primarily hip hop — trap, boom bap, and melodic rap. I also work on R&B-influenced tracks and sometimes crossover pop with Chinese elements.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is creating beats that perfectly match an artist’s vibe — whether it's dark trap, melodic, or high-energy. I also have a strong ear for mixing, ensuring every element sits right.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring fresh, genre-blending production that bridges Eastern and Western hip hop. I focus on catchy melodies, hard-hitting drums, and a polished mix that makes the song stand out on streaming platforms. My bilingual background also allows me to craft beats that suit both Chinese and English flows.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by discussing the client’s vision, references, and vocal style. Then I craft a beat and arrangement, send a draft for feedback, and refine it. If they provide vocals, I’ll mix and polish the track until it’s release-ready. Communication is key — I make sure the artist feels heard throughout.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is centered around Ableton Live and FL Studio, running on a powerful PC with an Audient audio interface. I use Yamaha HS5 monitors and Audio-Technica headphones for accurate mixing. My go-to plugins include Serum, Kontakt, Omnisphere, and the Waves bundle for mixing. I also have a MIDI keyboard and a Roland SP-404 for inspiration.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by producers like Dr. Dre for his mixing precision, Metro Boomin for dark trap energy, and Chinese producer Mai for blending Eastern melodies with hip hop. Also artists like Kendrick Lamar and Travis Scott push me to innovate.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly produce full hip hop tracks for artists — from beat making and arrangement to mixing. Many clients come to me for hard-hitting trap and boom bap beats with a modern twist, often blending Chinese and English vocals.
